IS GOOGLE'S KIDDLE THE ANSWER TO YOUR KIDS' DISCIPLINE

HIGHLIGHTS
• Google’s much-awaited search engine Kiddle is here and experts recommend it.
• Your child can search images, news and videos which are all tailored as 'safe-search’.

Even though Google answers it all, the fear of wrong internet exposure has always hovered around you when your kid is surfing for his school project. But you can take a chill pill now. Google's much-awaited search engine Kiddle is here and experts recommend it.
"I'm a mother of two kids and my elder one, 7, is quite a voracious reader. We were on Kiddle yester-night and frankly, I really liked it because it is very safe. We tried 'googling' the same keywords on Google and on Kiddle. The results on Kiddle shows stuff only related to kids," says Smriti Sawhney, Clinical psychologist, ePsyclinic.

So, if you search the word 'Apple', the first result Google would give would be about the company Apple. But the results from Kiddle will only be related to rhymes and research suitable for a child. Even if it picks up news on Apple, the company, it will only be related to what the company is doing for kids as their audience

The first 3 results on Kiddle will only show pages written specifically for kids; handpicked and checked by Kiddle editors. It has a child-friendly design with a planet and a character, to answer it all for your kid. Your child can search images, news and videos which are all tailored as 'safe-search'. Kiddle also claims that they do not collect any personally identifiable information and do not require any registration to use the search service hence you can stay assured that the personal information of your child will not be available on the web.
Now the question is, Kiddle caters to children of which age-group?
"Though it is advantageous to schools and institutions to introduce Kiddle but the disadvantage is psychological since no child would want to be called a kid beyond a certain cognitive age," says Rahul Ghosh, Professor & Director GS Coaching.
According to Dr Sawhney, "Kids aged between 8-10 will mostly be using Kiddle. This also depends a lot on the kind of background and the kind of exposure the kid has got. If you channelize the energies of your kid in a productive way so that the kid is not exposed to mass media a lot, they would be happy with Kiddle."
What if you realize your kid has outgrown the age of 'kids safe-search' engine? A successful model and working mother Alesia Raut says communication is the right key. "Kiddle is a good news to all parents but I would insist that every parent should have productive communication with their children at all times. One should cross the line of being an overprotective parent," says Alesia.
And this is what Kiddle says if your kids make some 'unwanted' searches!

Software Development

Software development is the procedure of developing software through consecutive phases. This procedure includes not only the actual writing of code but also the design of what is to be coded so as to meet the objectives. In the past, software companies produced programs which are placed on floppy discs and sold to the consumers. In this current world, companies are operating on many different business models and providing a wide array of products and services.

Software license sales, Maintenance services, Subscription fees, and other support services are playing a key role in the revenue of the companies. Companies are progressively turning to software-as-a-service which is nothing but a concept known as SaaS, where customers never install the software. Instead of that, customers will pay the subscription fee to access the software through the Internet on the company’s server.

Procedures involved in software development:

1) Identifying the required software
2) Analyzing the requirements
3) Detailed specification of the software requirements
4) Software designing
5) Programming
6) Testing
7) Maintenance

Software Development cycle includes:

The waterfall model: The waterfall model abridges the task scheduling. The only drawback in waterfall model is that it does not allow the user to perform much revision.

Rapid application development (RAD): You can develop products quickly using this development procedure.

Joint application development (JAD): The client or end user in the design and development of an application through a series of collaborative workshops is called as JAD

The prototyping model: The prototype is built, tested, and then reworked until the required prototype is achieved from which the complete system or product can be developed.

WordPress Plugins to Speed Up Your WordPress Site

Speeding up your WordPress blog goes a long way to improve its popularity. As the website loads faster, your visitor enjoys browsing, driving high traffic and generating revenue. While there are many proven ways to boost a site’s performance, in this article we will take a look at some WordPress plugins that allows you to perform critical front-end and back-end optimizations, within the comfort of your WordPress dashboard.

In the first section of this article I have listed the well known WordPress caching plugins and my recommendation. The next section has a list of few nice utility type plugins which you might find useful (depending on your situation). Please note that you don’t need to install all of the plugins listed here on your site (Just pick whatever fits your needs).

Top WordPress Caching Plugins

W3 Total Cache

A lot of people still use the WP Super Cache plugin. WP Super Cache is a nice plugin but have you tried theW3 Total Cache plugin yet? If you are using a WordPress caching plugin and you have never tried the W3 Total Cache then you seriously need to give this plugin a go. W3 Total Cache is a relatively newer caching plugin with better performance and the configuration is much easier and cleaner. It works nicely with the WP eStore, WP eMember and the WP Affiliate Platform Plugins too.

W3 Total Cache is the fastest and most complete WordPress performance optimization plugin. Trusted by many popular sites like: mashable.com, smashingmagazine.com, yoast.com…. tipsandtricks-hq.com and others.

W3 Total Cache improves the user experience of your blog by improving your server performance, caching every aspect of your site, reducing the download time of your theme and providing transparent content delivery network (CDN) integration.

Hyper Cache

Hyper Cache is a new caching system for WordPress, specifically written for people who have their blogs on low resources hosting provider (CPU and MySQL). It works even with hosting based on Microsoft IIS.

WP-Cache

WP-Cache is an efficient WordPress page caching system to make your site much faster and responsive. It works by caching WorPress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database.

WP Super Cache

WP Super Cache plugin generates static HTML files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a HTML file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

DB Cache

The DB Cache plugin caches every database query with given lifetime. It is much faster than other HTML caching plugins and uses less disk space for caching.

1 Blog Cacher

1 Blog Cacher is a WordPress plugin that caches your pages in order to increase the response speed and minimize the server load. Cached files are stored in HTML files, and organized in directories emulating the URLs (if “safe_mode” is not enabled), so it’s easy to display the content of the files and organize them (for instance deleting the cache for a given entry, for all categories, for all searches, for all posts from a given date, etc.)

What database actually FACEBOOK uses?

A billion of people are using FACEBOOK. Users are expressing themselves and interacting with their peer and friends through wall posts, uploading their photos, passing information’s about events and other meaningful information and for that reason facebook needs a large scalable database.

The challenge for Facebook’s engineers has been to keep the site up and running smoothly in spite of handling close to billion active users.

This article takes a look at some of the software and techniques they use to accomplish their mission.

MYSQL::

Facebook primarily uses MySQL for structured data storage such as wall posts, user information, timeline etc. This data is replicated between their various data centers.

MEMCACHED ::

It is also important to note that Facebook makes heavy use of Memcached,a memory caching system that is used to speed up dynamic database driven websites by caching data and objects in RAM to reduce reading time.Memcached is Facebook’s primary form of caching and greatly reduces the database load. Having a caching system allows Facebook to be as fast as it is at recalling your data.

HAYSTACK ::

The Photos application is one of Facebook’s most popular features. Up to date, users
have uploaded over 15 billion photos which make Facebook the biggest photo sharing website. For each uploaded photo, Facebook generates and stores four images of different sizes, which translates to a total of 60 billion images and 1.5PB of storage. The current growth rate is 220 million new photos per week, which translates to 25TB of additional storage consumed weekly.
Implements a HTTP based photo server which stores photos in a generic object store called Haystack.

CASSANDRA :

The Apache Cassandra database is the right choice when you need scalability and high availability without compromising performance. Facebook uses it for its Inbox search.
SCRIBE ::
Scribe is a flexible logging system that Facebook uses for a multitude of purposes internally. It’s been built to be able to handle logging at the scale of Facebook, and automatically handles new logging categories as they show up.

VARNISH :

Varnish is an HTTP accelerator which can act as a load balancer and also cache content which can then be served lightning-fast. Facebook uses Varnish to serve photos and profile pictures, handling billions of requests every day.

HIPHOP FOR PHP ::

HipHop for PHP is a set of PHP ex*****on engines. HipHop was developed by Facebook and was released as open source in early 2010. To date, Facebook has achieved morethan a 6x reduction in CPU utilization for the site using HipHop as compared with Apache and Zend PHP.Facebook is able to move fast and maintain a high number of engineers who are able to work across the entire codebase.

10 Amazing Facts You Didnt Know About Android

Android, the worlds mostly widely used smartphone operating System is growing day by day with its highly enriched user interface and extensively used mobile applications. Some are using it as platform to develop applications while the others use it as one of source which connects them with their friends and relatives due to its highly customizable and user friendly applications. So it can rather be said that Android is dominating the mobile market. But there are certain facts about android which users should be aware as they are using the Google based android applications.

Android was not founded by Google

The Android operating system was founded by Andy Rubin, Chris White, Nick Sears and Rich Miner under the umbrella Android Inc. It was established in October 2003. Android was later acquired by Google who had been backing the company all along. The deal was struck in August 2005 at a price of $50 million. Google marketed the platform to handset makers and carriers on the promise of providing a flexible, upgradable system.

Google launched Android in 2007

Google officially launched the operating system in November 2007. The operating system had initially been developed for cameras but Google saw a potential in the usage of the OS on smartphones and worked on a lot more features that you can see now. So Google saw it as potential opportunity to establish its impact on market by making it a platform for newer version of Smartphone.

Android was initially developed only for digital cameras

Android operating system was developed as a platform for digital cameras. But Google later changed its focus to smart phones as it saw its potential. So Google decided to go on and adopt Android OS for smartphones which has created a revolution in smartphones as it was widely accepted and easily accessible.

HTC Dream – First Android Smartphone

The first publicly used phone to run Android was HTC Dream. The HTC Dream was first released in October 2008. The device used the Linux-based Android operating system by Google. It used Android version 1.0 and was upgradable till 1.6. The Android operating system on the device was criticized for lack of functionality and software in comparison to certain established platforms like Nokia’s proprietary Symbian OS but was still considered to be innovative.

Android has more than a billion users

Google’s Vice President for Android, Sundar Pichai, announced that the Android operating system has powered hundreds of millions of mobile devices in more than 190 countries around the world. It’s the largest installed base of any mobile platform and growing fast—every day another million user’s power up their Android devices for the first time and start looking for apps, games, and other digital content.

Android Version Names

Apart from Android 1.0 and 1.1, all other Android versions have been named after sweet treats or desserts. These codenames are chosen alphabetically, and have thus far all been dessert items. Some codenames are associated with more than one version number, while others are limited to only a specific one. The reason for this inconsistency is not currently known. The naming typically appears to correspond to changes in the developer API levels, but this is not always true (example: 3.0 and 3.1 are both “Honeycomb” but they have different API levels). The names of different versions are :-

Cupcake:
Android 1.5

Donut:
Android 1.6

Eclair:
Android 2.0
Android 2.1

Froyo: (short for “frozen yogurt”)
Android 2.2

Gingerbread:
Android 2.3

Honeycomb:
Android 3.0
Android 3.1
Android 3.2

Ice Cream Sandwich:
Android 4.0

Jelly Bean:
Android 4.1
Android 4.2
Android 4.3

KitKat:
Android 4.4

Lolipop:
Android 5.0
Android 5.1

Android Naming Order

Android versions have been following an alphabetical order in their naming and upgrades but many users have failed to notice this.
A for Astro (1.0)
B for Bender (1.1)
C for Cupcake (1.5)
D for Donut (1.6)
E for Eclair (2.0)
F for Froyo (2.2.x)
G for Gingerbread (2.3.x)
H for Honeycomb (3.x)
I for Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x)
J for Jelly Bean (4.3)
K for KitKat (4.4)
L for Lollipop (5.0)

Open marketplace for distributing your apps

With Google being a member of Open Handset Alliance (OHA), Android has given users or interested party right access to modify the source code of the operating system. Android was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of the specs that a handset has to offer. It can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications. This has allowed users and smartphone manufacturer’s great flexibility in adding features to the operating system. This also enables OEM’s to develop their skinned versions.

Android is Free

Google offers Android operating system to smartphone manufacturers without payment for its license. This is one of the major advantages of Android which had attracted users as a platform to innovate more new apps based on it.

Google gains from Android

Despite offering the Android software free to smartphone manufacturers, Google will likely achieve its aim of becoming the mobile advertising king through Android devices. Google makes its biggest revenue from advertising and this will pay off in the big way with the users from PCs to smartphones and tablets. It must be noted that Android dominates both categories.

Project Loon : Google ready to fly thousands of Balloons to bring you Internet access

If you have read about Google’s Project Loon then you may know that Google is planning to send helium balloons around the world and deliver Internet to users in remote areas. The project was started in June 2013 by the top secret Google Division X and now is going for beta phase.

According to the latest news from Google, it will be conducting Project Loon trials in Australia, New Zealand and Latin America. Mike Cassidy from Google says that Google will be using its own manufacturing facility and automated systems to deliver a balloon in hours instead of days. He further stated that the company is now ready to launch thousands of balloons in the skies.

Cassidy stated that their testing of Project Loon revealed that the helium balloons can stay afloat for six months, far above where planes fly. Further Google can keep a real time track of the balloons and retrieve them once they have outlived their life or run out of helium. Cassidy said that Google has developed allied software systems and hardware for the same.

Helium powered balloons can be used in disaster regions like earthquake or tsunami affected ones, where on-ground communication has been destroyed can provide much necessary real time information about the situation on ground. Each balloon is nearly 50 feet in diameter and an electronic equipments hang underneath each carrier, which include radio antennae, a flight computer, an altitude control system and solar panels.

NEW BATTERY CHARGES PHONES IN A MINUTE

New battery charges your phone in just 60 seconds! Washington: A new inexpensive aluminium battery that could charge cellphones in just one minute has been developed by Stanford scientists.

The new aluminium battery is much safer than existing lithium-ion and alkaline batteries in wide use today and does not catch fire, researchers said.

“We have developed a rechargeable aluminium battery thatmay replace existing storage devices, such as alkaline batteries, which are bad for the environment, and lithium-ion batteries, which occasionally burst into flames,” said Hongjie Dai, a professor of chemistry at Stanford University. “Our new battery won’t catch fire, even if you drill through it,” said Dai.

Aluminium has long been an attractive material for batteries, mainly because of its low cost, low flammability and high-char8ge storage capacity. An aluminium-ion battery consists of two electrodes: a negatively charged anode made of aluminium and a positively charged cathode.

“People have tried different kinds of materials for the cathode,” Dai said. “We accidentally discovered that a simple solution is to use graphite, which is basically carbon. In our study, we identified a few types of graphite material that give us very good performance,” said Dai.

The team placed the aluminium anode and graphite cathode, along with an ionic liquid electrolyte, inside a flexible polymer-coated pouch.

“The electrolyte is basically a salt that’s liquid at room temperature, so it’s very safe,” said Stanford graduate student Ming Gong, co-lead author of the study.

Aluminium batteries are safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries used in millions of laptops and cell phones today, Dai added.

Smartphone owners know it can take hours to charge a lithium-ion battery. But the team reported “unprecedented charging times” of down to one minute with the aluminium prototype. ptiAluminium batteries developed at other laboratories usually died after just 100 charge-discharge cycles. But the Stanford battery was able to withstand more than 7,500 cycles without any loss of capacity.

“This was the first time an ultra-fast aluminium-ion battery was constructed with stability over thousands of cycles,” researchers said.

“Another feature of the aluminium battery is flexibility. You can bend it and fold it, so it has the potential for use in flexible electronic devices. Aluminium is also a cheaper metal than lithium,” Gong said.

Ads in free mobile apps have hidden costs for both users and developers, study finds

There's no such thing as free - especially with smartphone apps, according to a new study.

"Ads in 'free' apps drain your phone's battery faster, cause it to run slower, and use more data," said William Halfond, co-corresponding author of the study, which will be presented at the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) in Italy in May. Halfond collaborated with researchers at USC, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and Queen's University in Canada.
When compared to apps without ads, the researchers found that:

• Apps with ads use an average of 16 percent more energy - but up to 33 percent more. That lowers the battery life of a smartphone from 2.5 to 2.1 hours on average - or down to 1.7 hours at the high end of energy usage.

• A phone's Central Processing Unit (CPU) is like its brain - and ads eat up a lot of that brain power, slowing it down. Apps with ads take up an average of 48 percent more CPU time - 22 percent more memory use and 56 percent greater CPU utilization (the amount of time the CPU was used).
• Because the ads themselves are content that has to be downloaded, apps with ads cause smartphones to use much more data - up to 100 percent more, in some cases. On average, these apps use around 79 percent more network data, costing an estimated 1.7 cents every time they're used.
