Anansi heard a roar in the forest.
Below him,
Tiger was trapped in a deep pit.

Tiger leapt, clawed, and crashed back down.
Anansi leaned over the edge.
"Hello, Tiger.
Having trouble down there?"
Tiger's eyes burned.

He began clawing up the wall, inch by inch.
"You can do it," Anansi called.
"Come on."
Near the top, Tiger gasped,
"No more strength."
Anansi smiled.

"Then pray.
Put your paws together
and ask for strength."
Tiger did.
And the moment his paws left the wall,
he slid all the way back down.

Anansi ran off laughing.

The ego loves a challenge
when it sounds like dignity.

But not every climb is freedom.
Sometimes it is just the same trap,
with more effort.

Namaste.

Mazu sat in meditation outside his hut.

Still body.
Straight back.

A mind trying to become Buddha.

His teacher, Nanyue,
came by.

"What are you doing?"

"I am sitting," Mazu said,
"to become a Buddha."

Nanyue picked up a broken tile
and began rubbing it against a stone.

Mazu opened his eyes.

"Master,
what are you doing?"

"Polishing this tile
to make a mirror."

Mazu frowned.

"How can a tile
become a mirror?"

Nanyue looked at him.

"How can sitting
make you a Buddha?"

The forest went quiet.

Mazu bowed.

The ego can hide inside effort.
Even practice can become
a way of decorating the self.

Awakening is not becoming
a better version of the image.

It is seeing
the image was never who you were.

Namaste.

At one of Bankei's retreats,
a young monk was caught stealing.
The others brought him forward.

They wanted him expelled.
Bankei listened,
and let him stay.

Days later,
the same monk stole again.
Now the hall was angry.

The monks wrote a petition.
Send him away,
or we will leave.

Bankei read it quietly.
Then he said,

"You already know right from wrong.
This brother does not.

If I send him away,
who will teach him?"
The young monk lowered his face.
And began to weep.

Compassion is not pretending
that nothing happened.
It is seeing the wound clearly,
and refusing to make exile the only medicine.

Some people do not need
one more door closing.
They need one place
where learning is still possible.

Namaste.
