An API can return a successful response and still have reliability problems.

A reliable API needs to perform consistently under real-world conditions, including slow dependencies, unexpected errors, traffic spikes, and partial failures.Before calling an API reliable, look beyond the response code and examine performance, failure handling, dependencies, and observability.
It is about how consistently it works when conditions change.

Open Wireshark, filter for the Call-ID. That's step one, and it only covers SIP.
Now pull RTP separately to confirm the media stream actually made it through. Different tools, different filters, and the Call-ID from step one doesn't carry over, so it's back to manually matching IPs and ports to find the right session.

Now check Diameter logs for the auth and policy layer. By this point, the session ID may not even match the format used in the last two tools, and the thread connecting all three has to be rebuilt by hand, again.
Five tools. One incident.

Zero correlation between them, until a person manually holds it all in their head.
Every tool here did exactly what it was built to do. The failure isn't in Wireshark, the SIP trace, or the Diameter logs individually. It's in the handoffs between them, the parts no tool owns, and the parts a person ends up doing manually every single time.

What should the agent be allowed to do on its own?

The answer depends on context, risk, permissions, and how easily the outcome can be verified.
For production AI agents, defining where AI can act independently and where humans stay in the loop is part of the engineering.

Every AI vendor pitch leads with uptime. But what happens when the system stays available while the answers quietly become wrong?

Uptime tells you whether the system responded. It doesn't tell you whether the response was accurate. A model can meet every SLA target while its real-world performance declines after a backend or model update.

Before your next AI vendor renewal, ask one question: What does the contract say if the system is up but the output goes wrong?

If the agreement has no clear answer, your SLA may be protecting availability not AI quality.
