Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, UNESCO has announced “access to information in times of crisis” as the theme of the 2020 edition of the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), celebrated every year on 28 September. This day highlights the importance of access to information in saving lives and mitigating the impact of crises such as the current pandemic, as well as in shaping sustainable policies.

Sign Language is a language that employs signs made with the hands and other movements, including facial expressions and postures of the body, used primarily by people who are deaf. Sign languages are as rich and complex as any spoken language. This day is particularly significant as it presents the opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.

Technology has been working towards creating comprehensive sign language translate devices by capturing the hand motions using a camera and interpreting it using deep AI algorithms. There are efforts even to integrate it with voice interfaces like Alexa, Siri etc.
