On 25th November, 2016, students at NMIMS Bangalore had the opportunity to interact with Mr. Dattatreya Sharma. He is the founder of GuRu Prevails, India’s first data science consulting and training company. He has 16 years of experience in the international IT industry, including projects in Canada and the United States. He studied electronics engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Allahabad and holds an MBA from the SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai. He is certified in machine learning and natural language processing by professors Andrew Ng and Dan Jurafsky of Stanford University. He is a coach for data scientists at IBM Watson Labs and SAP Labs.

The session started with two questions; “What is Intelligence?” and “What do you understand by Artificial Intelligence?” followed by answers to the same. He defined intelligence as the act of taking an optimal action to reach from a start state to a goal state with the intention of acruing maximum reward in the process. Artificial intelligence is from the lenses of reinforcement learning. He discussed three types of machine learning namely supervised learning that includes prediction and classification, unsupervised learning that includes clustering and reinforcement learning that works based on penalties and rewards as per performance.

He presented a very interesting case of finding a life partner using one’s mobile phone, wherein the machine compares your attributes with millions of other people using AI based on mathematical models and computer programs. The case provided an insight into How Data Scientists actually think?

In conclusion he said that all of us are surrounded by data analytics that affect our everyday lives and tend to live in the blue pill. Knowledge of AI could help us come out of the blue pill and embrace the red pill that would eventually help us grow as a human being.
