Google's Search Results Rocky This Week..

This week has been a mess for Google's search results, despite Google denying anything is going on to me.

There were some tools that sparked up on November 14th that I didn't see from the webmaster chatter.

This whole week, I've been seeing a lot of sporadic complaints in both WebmasterWorld and Google Webmaster Help forums. Typically, these sporadic reports, at least I think, mean Google targeted a link network and some sites were majorly impacted by it. It also may be a weird Google bug. But not necessarily a Google update. Of course, it could be that Panda was updated, which Google stopped confirming.

It is hard to tell.

The tools are all lighting up over the past few days. Moz has warmer than normal temperature the past couple days, SERPs.com has higher volatility numbers than normal, SERP Metrics shows higher flux than normal and Algoroo is in the red the past couple days. Something seems to be up.

Is it a major algorithm update - I don't think so. If I had to guess, maybe Panda was rerun or maybe Google squashed some sort of link network.

I am honestly not sure but Google is indeed a bit rocky the past few days.

Google Working On New Ad Tracking Technique, AdID, But Why?

USA Today reported this week that Google is looking to replace how they do ad tracking, i.e. currently using cookies, with something they are calling AdID.
USA Today explained that the AdID would be "transmitted to advertisers and ad networks that have agreed to basic guidelines, giving consumers more privacy and control over how they browse the Web." It seems like it works a lot like cookies and browsers can give users more control over how privacy works there, although it isn't easy for novice users.
That being said, I am sure Google is coming up with ways to make privacy and control of ads "easier" for consumers and web users. But not without something in return.
This will likely lead to Google controlling more of the online ad space by trying to change the industry standard, i.e. cookies and come out with something they build from the ground up.
Would it potentially lead to monopolistic practices? Not for me to decide. Nor am I am able to without seeing what they are building.
"Technological enhancements can improve users' security while ensuring the Web remains economically viable. We and others have a number of concepts in this area, but they're all at very early stages," Google spokesman Rob Shilkin said.

Google Calls DMOZ Link Unnatural By Mistake

Dave Cain posted on Google+ that his client received an unnatural link warning via Google Webmaster Tools and one of the two examples given was a link he has from DMOZ, the Open Directory Project. Yea, one of the oldest web directories online, which was once upon cited as a good link to have by Google themselves.
Before I get too far in, I wanted to say Google said that example link, the DMOZ one, is a mistake and should not have been given as an example.
Google's John Mueller said, "that particular DMOZ/ODP link-example sounds like a mistake on our side."
This may be the second time we reported a natural link being called as unnatural by Google in a short period of time.
John does remind Dave that although that DMOZ link is natural the site still has a manual action and needs some link cleanup. John wrote:
Keep in mind that these are just examples -- fixing (or knowing that you can ignore) one of them, doesn't mean that there's nothing else to fix. With that in mind, I'd still double-check to see if there are other issues before submitting a reconsideration request, so that you're a bit more certain that things are really resolved (otherwise it's just a bit of time wasted with back & forth).

Google's Matt Cutts Issues Subtle Warning To Ghost Networks

Last night, Matt Cutts tweeted that he is working up several "ghost-related puns for a spam network."
I suspect they are working on targeting more and more link and spam networks and it is thus on his mind. I would think this spam topic is always on his mind, since he has been working in this area for over ten years now.
That being said, the pun he shared was "They try to look super natural, but using them will dampen your spirits."
Now, more importantly, is this a sign that Google just released yet another target aimed at another spam network? Could be.
The folks at BlackHat Forums asked if this is the time that the SAPE network of links was finally completely busted. He cited an increase in the number of complaints from SAPE link network users and how many of them have seen either manual actions in their Webmaster Tools accounts or a decrease in search traffic from Google.
