The Nokia X is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), and is powered by Microsoft and Nokia services. The highlight of the Nokia X is the highly customised version of Android, with the Metro-inspired UI and access to Nokia's own app store. Nokia has used the AOSP version corresponding to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the baseline for its operating system.

The Nokia X offers dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) support with dual standby. The first Android phone from Nokia features a 4-inch IPS LCD display with a 480x800 pixel resolution, translating to a pixel density of 233ppi.

MWC 2014 - Smartwatches and connected-bracelets rule the floor:

Smartphone-connected watches and bracelets have emerged as the technological phenomenon for 2014 as manufacturers rush for new sources of revenues.
At the industry's biggest annual fair, the February 24-27 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, players from global leader Samsung to China's Huawei and Sony Mobile released a string of such devices.

Connected by wireless Bluetooth technology to the handset, they let users take calls and check emails or text messages. Many now offer to track your every step, read your heart rate, and even monitor your sleep pattern.

Mobile titan Samsung showed off a Gear 2 watch with sports tracking software, a heart rate sensor and camera; and a sleek Gear Fit bracelet, also with a pulse sensor, featuring a curved touch screen that wraps around your wrist.

China's Huawei presented its TalkBand B1, which has a pedomotor and pop-out earpiece for taking calls.

Sony Mobile is banking on its SmartBand SWR10, which keeps a record of your movements; the photographs you take; your communications and even the music you listen to. It will measure your sleep cycle, too, to decide the best moment to wake you.

South Korea's LG said it would release a smart watch this year.

The big question mark in the industry is whether Samsung's archrival Apple, which traditionally skips the mobile fair, is developing a much-awaited iWatch or similar mobile device.

As smartphone sales slow in mature markets such as the United States or Western Europe, such connected objects offer a chance to pry open the wallets of consumers reluctant to update their devices.

Global smartphone sales surged 42.3 percent to 968 million units last year, powered by demand for cheaper devices in developing markets, according to industry research group Gartner Inc.

Yet sales in mature, more profitable markets actually slowed, it said.

Research house Canalys predicts sales of connected bracelets and watches, however, will surge to 17 million units this year, and 45 million in 2017.

In Barcelona, manufacturers showed off some examples, from a connected basketball that can improve your shot to a smart toothbrush that gives you tips on technique.

"The world is approaching a tipping point in technology," Nokia chairman and interim chief executive Risto Siilasmaa told reporters in Barcelona.

"We see a world where connectivity will expand massively, linking everyone and everything, altogether tens or hundreds of billions of physical objects."

Objects would be aware of their location, temperature, motion, and chemical composition, while also being capable of communicating to each other, said the head of Nokia, whose handset division is being taken over by Microsoft.

'Massive' data flows
"Massive flows of information will come from these objects, making today's data traffic look modest," Siilasmaa said.

Excluding computers, phones and tablets, there were 175 million connected objects in 2013, a market worth 24.2 billion euros ($33.0 billion), according to research house Idate.

That figure is predicted to rise to 470 million objects generating revenue of 40 billion euros by 2017, Idate said.

Market analysts booz&co estimated that 80 percent of revenue in the connected objects industry will go to information service providers such as Google, not the networks.

Yet as networks becomes more advanced, the operators can gather greater volumes of real-time, potentially lucrative data about each of their users.

As operators learn to analyse each user's location, surroundings and habits, that information could spark a boom in personalised advertising, providing customers opt-in, analysts say.

Improved location and personal data-based advertising could generate as much as $44 billion a year in revenue by 2017 for network operators, according to a study by mobile network technology group Syniverse.

Indeed, research house Gartner Inc. predicts that global mobile advertising will grow from an expected $18 billion this year to $42 billion in just three years, helped in part by geolocation-based publicity drawing in smaller, local advertisers.

Nokia X Android phones - Life in the Fastlane:

By design, Nokia's new Android smartphones will underwhelm users of high-end phones. The Nokia X line was created with emerging markets in mind, so the company emphasised keeping prices low, meaning the user interface is relatively simple.

The home screen resembles the one on Nokia's Windows-based Lumia phones, even though it's Android underneath. But Nokia Corp. added a Fastlane feature, a screen with quick access to your most-used apps. You get to it by swiping from the left or right edge of the home screen or tapping the back button at the bottom.

The basic Nokia X phone costs 89 euros ($122) and has a 4-inch screen, measured diagonally, and a 3 megapixel camera. A X+ version with an SD storage card costs 99 euros, while an XL with a 5-inch screen and 5 megapixel camera goes for 109 euros.

In the brief time I've had with the Nokia X at this week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain, I have found the Fastlane feature to be a good start. It's something I would like to see on more phones, including Nokia's Windows devices.

I hate to spend time customising gadgets, getting the icons for the most-used apps on the main home screen. The nice thing about Fastlane is that you don't have to spend any time on that. Your favourite apps are just one swipe away - sort of.

The top of Fastlane shows you what's coming up, whether that's alarms about to ring or future events in your calendar. Below that are your recently used apps. The ones you just used will be at the top, so you don't have to scroll down.

For some apps, you get information that normally comes with notifications, such as previews of text messages or alerts that three people have tried to reach you on WeChat, a Chinese social network. You see small versions of recent photos and can tap for the larger version in the photo gallery app. You see calls you missed, songs you heard and websites you visited.

It could get overwhelming, so you can block certain apps and certain notifications from appearing in Fastlane. In the settings, you can also add a shortcut to one social network, such as Facebook or Twitter.

That's where Fastlane can improve - understanding better which apps I use most over a period of days or months and creating a section at the top for those.

This week, for example, I was too busy to check Facebook, but that doesn't mean I don't use it regularly. But in Fastlane, Facebook would drop toward the bottom in a matter of days, unless I happen to choose it as my one shortcut.

Why not make sure the most-used apps are stored as favourites at the top of the screen? Nokia says it's considering that.

Likewise, if I haven't used something for months after using it daily, Fastlane can assume I've grown tired of it and automatically remove it. Myspace anyone?

Nokia doesn't plan to make Fastlane for its Windows phones, and I doubt it'll extend it to rival Android phones, such as my Samsung Galaxy S III. It's something it wants to keep exclusive to its own phones to compete.

Apple India offers up to Rs. 40,000 buy back discount on purchase of new laptops:

Apple is offering up to Rs. 40,000 buy back discount on purchase of a new Mac laptop in India, if you turn in your old Mac laptop for exchange.
As per an advertisement in a leading daily, Apple is offering a discount of up to Rs. 40,000 if you give a Mac laptop that is less than two years old in exchange. The company will offer up to Rs. 30,000 for turning in Apple portables that are between two and three years old, while the discount on offer for exchanging Mac laptops that are between three and four years old is Rs. 25,000. If you have a Mac laptop that is more than four years old, you're out of luck, since there is no discount on offer under the present scheme.

The advertisement notes that the final offer value is at the sole discretion of the reseller, a standard practice with these buy back schemes. Apple adds that this is "limited period" offer, but does not mention an end date.

The discounts are being offered on purchase of Mac laptops only. In other words, you can turn in your old Mac laptop to get discounts on a new one - there's nothing to interest present or prospective owners of Mac mini, iMac or Mac Pro computers.

Interestingly, the advertisement adds that the offer is also available on laptops of other brands as well - customers are advised to check in-store for more details. Though Apple does not mention it specifically, we expect the discounts on offers on Windows laptops of a similar age to be significantly lower. If you have a Windows laptop and are looking to switch to the Mac, you may want to see if your local Apple reseller has a good buy back offer that interests you.

Sony Xperia Z2 and M2 make MWC 2014 debut:

Sony's latest flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z2, has been revealed at MWC in Barcelona today, offering waterproof casing and a 20.7MP camera that shoots in 4K.

The camera packed into the back of the new phone uses an Exmor RS CMOS sensor and has a maximum resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 - four times the detail of Full HD.

Sony also claims the Z2 boasts its brightest and most detailed screen to date thanks to its "X-Reality" technology. Apps and media are well realised on the 5.2-inch full HD display. Check out our hands-on review for our first impressions.

Inside the Xperia Z2 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor with a massive 3GB of RAM and a high capacity 3,200mAh battery. Impressive as Sony has kept the chassis down to a mere 8.2mm thick.

Coming in at the more affordable end is Sony's M2 which lands at €220 and offers up a 4.8-inch qHD screen and an 8MP Exmor RS sensor.

At present, the Xperia M2 also holds the distinguished title of being the world's slimmest 4G smartphone and features a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 2,300mAh battery.

Laslty, the M2 is also available as a dual-SIM model which will let you set up two SIMs independently with custom ring tones and contacts and keep both active even when talking through one of them.

Both the Xperia M2 and Z2 will launch globally from April 2014.

Motorola Moto X 2 will launch late summer hints Motorola:

Speculation has been rampant that the company’s purchase by Lenovo could mean an end to its low-cost smartphone ranges, such as the Moto X.

During Mobile World Congress, Motorola held a question and answer session on Twitter. One user asked the company “When is the next version of Moto X?”.

Motorola responded “Keep posted – hint – late summer”. It did not expand on whether that means it will unveil the smartphone then or if it is when more information about its purchase by Lenovo will be announced.

The Moto X was unveiled as Motorola’s flagship smartphone last year. It was designed to rival other high end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5 and HTC One.

However, it was also cheaper than the other devices when bought SIM-free. That endeared it to many smartphone buyers.

Motorola also hinted that its recent purchase by Lenovo would not result in an increase in prices.

Responding to another question on Twitter, the company said: “Great smartphones should be available to everyone & days of $600 phones are limited.”

The company also revealed that it is unlikely to move away from Android. When questioned, it said: “We’d have to compromise if we spread across ecosystems. We’ll continue to focus on Android.”
