TLDH Appoints Former ICANN Staffer Salazar To Its Executive

He may have taken the fall for glitches in ICANN’s TLD Application System failure in June this year, but Michael Salazar has fallen on his feet, having been appointed chief financial officer for Top Level Domain Holdings, an applicant for several generic Top Level Domains.

The announcement, along with the appointment of Caspar von Veltheim, who has been responsible for TLDH’s continental European applications in respect of .NRW and .BAYERN, as an executive director of TLDH with responsibility for Europe, comes in the lead-up to ICANN’s prioritisation draw for processing applications and initial evaluations for new gTLDs on 17 December.

The announcements are part of TLDH’s registry business, Minds + Machines, plans to expand its operational team. Subject to the satisfactory completion of standard regulatory checks in compliance with the AIM Rules, Salazar will also join the Board of TLDH as an executive director.

“TLDH is a leading applicant for new gTLDs and we are delighted that Michael is joining the executive team,” said Antony Van Couvering, CEO of Minds + Machines. “Michael has a deep understanding of the new gTLD programme from his three years at ICANN and he will make an immediate and valuable contribution as we develop Minds + Machines in 2013.”

As part of the changes David Weill, who has been a director of the Company since it was first admitted to trading on AIM and has been chief financial officer, has stepped down from the Board.

The Company has also published the notice of annual general meeting to be held on 21 December 2012 at which, inter alia, annual shareholder approval will be sought for the Company’s investing policy and to appoint Mazars as the Company’s auditors.

.CZ Passes 1 Million domain name registrations

The .CZ domain name reached another milestone with the total number of domains registered in the namespace breaking through the 1 million mark .

According to Nic.cz website,there are now 1,001,497 .CZ domain name registered.This means that more than 10,000 .CZ domain names are registered each month.

"Today at 5:24 pm, domain name number 1,000,000 appeared in the register of the Czech national domain .CZ maintained by the CZ. NIC Association.Among the top-level domains of member states of the EU, the .CZ domain became the 12th “millionaire” and is among those with the fastest growth. Over 10,000 new domains are registered each month.This achievement was helped particularly by the introduction of the FRED registration system, which is 5 years old this October, and which made the registration process considerably faster and cheaper.

“The importance of internet domains keeps growing. The primary reason for that is the development of the internet, which is increasingly becoming an integral part of our lives. And if you want people to find you quickly and easily on the internet, you need a good domain. A dedicated internet domain is now one of the basic tools of all organisations. Even individuals are recognising its benefits more and more. The importance of internet domains is also illustrated by the process, which has already started, of extending the domain space with more suffixes. According to the most recent statistics published by CZ.NIC this April, the share of domain names owned by individuals is gradually increasing, accounting for 58 per cent of .CZ domains today. Most holders have only a single domain; in 2011, the highest number of .CZ domains with one owner was 4,054.In terms of regional distribution, the largest number of holders comes from the Central Bohemian region; the Karlovy Vary region has the lowest representation.

The content analysis of 1,200 randomly selected websites in the .CZ domain shows that the highest percentage of them are company websites (41 per cent), followed by parked domains (19 per cent), e-shops, and non-functional websites (8 per cent). Personal websites account for 7 per cent of domains."

Google files complaint over NigeriaGoogle.com

Google has filed a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum,asserting legal rights over NigeriaGoogle.com domain name.

Google should expect the National Arbitration Forum order the domain name to be transferred,considering the company owns the "Google" mark .

The National Arbitration Forum will examine if the domain name is confusingly similar to the trademarked name.Moreover,it will examine if the owner of the YouTubeUrdu.com domain name has rights over it and if the domain is being used in bad faith.NigeriaGoogle.com will be passed over to Google if its falls under all three of these stipulations.

The case is still pending compliance checks with the National Arbitration Forum .

ICANN's Pritz In Shock Resignation Over Conflict Of Interest

Like a bolt from the blue, ICANN has announced that new generic Top Level Domain guru Kurt Pritz, officially known as Chief Strategy Officer, is resigning due to a conflict of interest.

In a letter to the ICANN community, the new CEO and president Fadi Chehadé wrote "regretfully ... I have accepted the resignation of Kurt Pritz, who has served most recently as ICANN's Chief Strategy Officer."

"Kurt has submitted his resignation because of a recently identified conflict of interest, which he immediately communicated to ICANN. After analysing this conflict of interest, we decided that a change in Kurt's role within ICANN would be appropriate. Kurt decided to resign his position and role as an officer of ICANN, to best serve the interests of the organisation. Kurt will be engaged as a subject matter expert where needed, but will have no access to new gTLD applicant information nor will he play a role in the new gTLD programme."

What the conflict of interest is has, so far, been a tightly kept secret. But it has certainly shocked the ICANN community with seemingly no hint that this was coming.

Pritz has been the person ICANN went to when there was a problem, and was handed direct oversight of the entire new gTLD programme in June after then new gTLD Program Director Michael Salazar resigned after the failure of the digital archery method of choosing the order in which new gTLD applications would be processed and before that in April, when the system for applying for new gTLDs was overcome with a glitch and led to applications being suspended.
