Asthma affects over 300 million people worldwide. Asthmatics experience difficulty in breathing and airflow obstruction caused by inflammation and constriction of the airways. Home monitoring of lung function is the preferred course of action to give physicians and asthma patients a chance to control the disease jointly. Thus, it is important to develop accurate and efficient asthma monitoring devices that are easy for patients to use. While classic spirometry is currently the best way to capture a complete picture of airflow obstruction and lung function, the machines are bulky and generally require supervision. Portable peak flow meters are available but are inconvenient to use. There also exist no portable inexpensive exhaled breath biomarker devices commercially available to simultaneously measure concentrations of multiple chemical biomarkers. We have created a user-friendly, accurate, and portable external mobile device accessory that collects spirometry, peak expiratory flow, exhaled nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and oxygen concentration information from patients after two breath maneuvers. We have also developed a software application that records and stores the gathered test information and e-mails the results to a physician. The capsule endoscope is being integrated with various kinds of actuators and sensors to form a micromedical robot, and hence, it requires much more energy than before. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is promising to address the energy supply problem, but strictly restricted to keep safe. Human body communication (HBC), a low-power consumption method, can greatly reduce energy for communication. This paper, for the first time, combines HBC with WPT to investigate the possibility of their working together, and focuses on the effects of WPT on the communication effectiveness of HBC. Parameters for both HBC and WPT are set to be those widely studied or even clinically used. The frequencies and peak-peak voltages for HBC were selected as 3 MHz and 3.3 V, and WPT were adjusted from 0 kHz to 1.5 MHz and 0 to 400 V. On the one hand, HBC with fundamental sinusoidal wave was used to study the interaction. The simulation results accord well with the experimental results, and both of them indicate that the HBC signal can be accurately extracted based on IIR notch filter. On the other hand, HBC modulated by binary differential phase shift keying method was utilized. Groups of experiments were conducted, and the received signals were demodulated by improved polarity comparison method. Bit error rate was calculated to be zero in all the studied frequencies and voltages. Results indicate that HBC and WPT can cowork well when integrated in one capsule robot.

an advanced insulin bolus advisor for people with diabetes on multiple daily injections or insulin pump therapy. The proposed system, which runs on a smartphone, keeps the simplicity of a standard bolus calculator while enhancing its performance by providing more adaptability and flexibility. This is achieved by means of applying a retrospective optimization of the insulin bolus therapy using a novel combination of run-to-run (R2R) that uses intermittent continuous glucose monitoring data, and case-based reasoning (CBR). The validity of the proposed approach has been proven by in-silico studies using the FDA-accepted UVa-Padova type 1 diabetes simulator. Tests under more realistic in-silico scenarios are achieved by updating the simulator to emulate intrasubject insulin sensitivity variations and uncertainty in the capillarity measurements and carbohydrate intake. The CBR(R2R) algorithm performed well in simulations by significantly reducing the mean blood glucose, increasing the time in euglycemia and completely eliminating hypoglycaemia. Finally, compared to an R2R stand-alone version of the algorithm, the CBR(R2R) algorithm performed better in both adults and adolescent populations, proving the benefit of the utilization of CBR. In particular, the mean blood glucose improved from 166 ± 39 to 150 ± 16 in the adult populations (p = 0.03) and from 167 ± 25 to 162 ± 23 in the adolescent population (p = 0.06). In addition, CBR(R2R) was able to completely eliminate hypoglycaemia, while the R2R alone was not able to do it in the adolescent population.
