Over the top (OTT) is a media distribution practice that allows a streaming content provider to sell audio, video, and other media services directly to the consumer over the internet, via streaming media as a standalone product, bypassing telecommunications, cable or broadcast television service providers, that traditionally act as a controller or distributor of such content.
The number of OTT platforms operating in India are many, including Netflix, Amazon Video, ALT Balaji, Hungama, NexGTV, Yupp TV, Viu, Hotstar, Voot, Sony Liv, Hoichoi (Bengali OTT), Asianet, Spuul, Ozee. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are global content aggregators who are trying to adapt to Asian markets by bringing original series from India. Amazon and Netflix have paid content, the latter is free for the first month of membership while the former is completely paid.
