17 अक्टूबर को नवरात्र का पहला दिन है और इस दिन घटस्थापना के बाद मां दुर्गा के प्रथम स्वरूप शैलपुत्री का पूजन, अर्चन और स्तवन किया जाता है। शैल का अर्थ है हिमालय और पर्वतराज हिमालय के यहां जन्म लेने के कारण इन्हें शैलपुत्री कहा जाता है। पार्वती के रूप में इन्हें भगवान शंकर की पत्नी के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। वृषभ (बैल) इनका वाहन होने के कारण इन्हें वृषभारूढा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इनके दाएं हाथ में त्रिशूल है और बाएं हाथ में इन्होंने कमल धारण किया हुआ है। मां शैलपुत्री का पूजन और स्तवन निम्न मंत्र से किया जाता है।

वन्दे वांछितलाभाय, चंद्रार्धकृतशेखराम्‌।
वृषारूढां शूलधरां, शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्‌ ॥

अर्थात मैं मनोवांछित लाभ के लिये अपने मस्तक पर अर्धचंद्र धारण करने वाली, वृष पर सवार रहने वाली, शूलधारिणी और यशस्विनी मां शैलपुत्री की वंदना करता हूं।

भगवान राम ने भी किया था व्रत, इनकी पूजा करने पर मिलेगा धन-आयु-बल
