Mautam is a rare ecological event in Mizoram where bamboo forests, especially Melocanna baccifera, synchronously flower and produce seeds every 48-50 years before dying off. This mass flowering provides a feast of seeds for rats, causing their population to explode. Once the seeds are consumed, the rats invade farms, destroying crops like rice and maize, leading to severe food shortages and sometimes famines.

The last Mautam occurred around 2006-2008, and the next is expected around 2055-2057. Mizoram’s heavy reliance on bamboo and subsistence farming makes it particularly vulnerable.
