The challenge of manufacturing in India has been put on the front burner by the government. The political and fiscal commitment to the same is beyond doubt. Manufacturing in India except in a few sectors has languished in India, growing at significantly lower rates than the service sectors, since the reform of 1992-93. Electronics with vast imports and a large home and external market offers the tantalizing potential to give meaning and success to the idea of “Make in India”. With nearly US$80b of imports, with the right policies it should be possible to have local value addition amounting to at least 50% of the above in a matter of a few years, thereby resulting in rates of growth of the manufacturing sector to well above 10% per annum.
Subsidies, proactive government initiatives to attract FDI and investments in general, the willingness to compensate industry for high interest rates in India, to subsidize fab operations in India, the recent correction of the inverted duty structures in the industry in India all point to seriousness on the part of the government. Similarly, the interest in India, shown by some of the leading electronics and semiconductor manufacturers augers well for the industry. However major policy shifts including removing the current macroeconomic biases against value addition in India remain.
An ecosystem that would crowd in investments and nurture competition in electronics is what needs to happen. The present seminar aims to bring together like minded people on a common platform to share opinions and ideas on the way forward for the electronics industry.
The objectives of the seminar are to:
Serve as a meeting ground for policy makers, academics, investors, manufacturers, international players, in the various segments of the semiconductor industry to come together to brain storm the current situation and the likely changes necessary for an explosive growth of the industry.
Present an opportunity for the semiconductor industry to understand the basis and the particular segments where growth is likely to happen as the industry is characterized by large number of players in deep relationships that go beyond markets.
The seminar is being organized by the IIMA Idea Telecom Centre of Excellence (IITCOE-www.iitcoe.in), of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, along with Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY).
