The results surprised us.

We searched some of our own SEO topics on ChatGPT and Perplexity.

In some cases the answers were citing other websites instead of ours, even though we had content on the same topic.

That raised a simple question.

How does AI search decide which content to show?

So we tested it.

Same topic.

Two websites.

Two different writing approaches.

Site 1
Traditional SEO style.
Keyword focused. Structured like a typical blog post.

Site 2
Written simply.
Like explaining the topic to a friend.

Same information.
Different writing style.

After around 45 days we checked results on Perplexity AI.

Site 2 appeared in 13 out of 20 searches.

Site 1 appeared only 2 or 3 times.

Same topic. Same information.

But a completely different outcome.

From our testing, AI search tools are not necessarily looking for:

โ€ข the biggest website
โ€ข the highest domain authority

What they seem to prefer is simply:

the clearest answer.

Those signals seem to matter more for AI search.

Old style content like:

โ€ข long intros before answering the question
โ€ข generic articles repeating the same information

are becoming less effective.

Even if they still rank on Google.

They often do not appear in AI-generated answers.
