Analysis of Denisovan fragments in modern humans. Many conclusions are similar to the 2014 papers that did the same for Neanderthals

Some present-day humans derive up to ~5% [] of their ancestry from archaic Denisovans, an even larger proportion than the ~2% from Neanderthals []. We developed methods that can disambiguate the locations of segments of Denisovan and Neanderthal ancestry ...

New paper from the lab is now online in PNAS. This project was led by our collaborator Lynne Maquat from University of Rochester Medical Center, and Eitan Lavi from the lab helped with many analyses. In the paper, we suggest that SINEs may independently get inserted into orthologous 3'UTRs in human and mouse. We show several cases that these SINEs participate in regulating gene expression by means of Staufen-mediated mRNA decay (SMD). This is a fine example of convergent evolution of SINE-directed SMD. The now-extinct passenger pigeon used to be one of the most numerous vertebrates on Earth. Murray et al. examined the genomes of four passenger pigeon samples from different locales within its range. They describe the interplay between passenger pigeon population size, genome structure and recombina...

Now there are three kinds of orangutans

Researchers have identified a new species of orangutan in an isolated forest on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Fewer than 800 individuals remain, and the construction of a dam and road threaten the prime habitat of the ape. A combination of anatomical, ecological, and genetic data convinced resea...
