For a commissioner or franchise owner, that means valuation swings can hinge on one or two games.

Even the 2-1 head-to-head edge Phoenix holds over Portland came in games with depleted rosters (Source: Ynet - https://www.ynet.co.il/sport/worldbasketball/article/rki0of53bx). That's a tiny sample deciding a full year. If structure amplifies noise, shouldn't the league quantify it?

Brandes, Marmulla and Smokovic prove tournament winning probabilities can be computed exactly instead of relying on brute-force simulation (Source: Stop Simulating! Efficient Computation of Tournament Winning Probabilities - https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.10411v1). If a lower seed has a 40% single-game win probability, bracket math implies roughly a one-in-four path in a short format using that method.

Yes, the play-in boosts ratings. Everyone knows that. But if you oversee competition policy, will you publish the exact probability that season-long merit is overturned — or continue monetizing suspense without disclosing its structural cost?
