Behind every tidy office setup, there’s a bit of hands-on work! 😄

Not every IT job involves sitting at a desk.

Sometimes, it means getting down to the practical stuff — reconnecting power, running Ethernet cables, tidying up connections and making sure everything is working properly.

A client recently had some computers repositioned around their office, so I was called in to help get everything reconnected and working as it should.

This photo was taken during the process. Clearly, I was having far too much fun! 😂

It’s a good reminder that there’s often a lot of work behind the scenes that people never see.

From office reconfigurations and computer moves to troubleshooting and day-to-day IT support, sometimes you simply need to roll up your sleeves and solve the problem.

🚀 10x Network Performance Improvement Delivered! 🚀

Recently called out to a customer site where a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband connection was only achieving 100Mbps throughput across the network.

After carrying out a full network assessment, I confirmed that the infrastructure was equipped with Cat 5e cabling and Gigabit switches, so the hardware was capable of supporting the full fibre speed. The challenge was identifying what was forcing the network to operate at Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) speeds.

Following careful troubleshooting, I located the root cause: a poorly terminated network cable. I replaced the faulty cable with a new Cat 6 cable and re-terminated both ends with new RJ45 connectors.

The result? A speed test confirmed that the network is now operating at its full potential, delivering throughput that matches the fibre connection entering the building.

Over the past few weeks, I've been working on a custom digital transformation project for an agricultural client JJ O Harte Limited (CLR Co-Op) that has now gone live.

The challenge was straightforward:

Truck drivers were collecting farm data manually, collection reports were being created and distributed manually by office staff, and there was no streamlined process for generating customer-facing documentation required for regulatory compliance.

The client is involved in the transportation of poultry litter/manure and is required to provide commercial movement documentation to support Department of Agriculture compliance requirements.

Each collection requires a traceable record detailing the source farm, transportation details, destination, weights, dates and delivery information to maintain full traceability throughout the supply chain.

The solution involved designing and implementing an end-to-end Microsoft Power Platform workflow:

✅ Built a custom Power Apps mobile application for drivers to record collections in the field

✅ Created a relational SharePoint data structure to manage Farmers, Collections, Loads and Deliveries

✅ Automated document generation using Microsoft Word templates

✅ Implemented automated PDF report creation

✅ Built Power Automate workflows to generate, distribute and archive collection reports

✅ Automated email delivery of reports directly to farmers

✅ Implemented document lifecycle management and cleanup processes

The result is a fully digital workflow that takes data captured by drivers in the field and automatically produces a compliant commercial transport document for every collection. The system provides complete traceability from collection through to final delivery while significantly reducing administrative effort and the risk of manual error.

What started as a simple requirement evolved into a complete operational and compliance management system combining Power Apps, SharePoint, Power Automate, Microsoft Graph and document automation.

Projects like this are a great reminder that digital transformation isn't always about large-scale ERP implementations. Sometimes the biggest impact comes from automating the critical operational processes that businesses rely on every day to remain efficient, compliant and audit-ready.

Im going to try posting a little more on Social media, Ive gotten out of the habit. I think its important to keep people in the know regarding Projects, tasks I have completed.

Over the past few weeks I've completed the design, deployment and commissioning of a complete industrial network infrastructure for a manufacturing facility.

The project involved far more than simply installing network equipment. The objective was to build a secure, reliable and scalable network capable of supporting production-critical systems while maintaining high availability throughout the factory.

The deployment included:

• Enterprise firewall installation and configuration (SonicWall)
• UniFi enterprise network design and deployment
• Multi-switch architecture with Core, Production and Distribution switching
• Fibre backbone installation between communications cabinets using 10Gb single-mode fibre
• VLAN design and implementation for secure network segmentation
• Dedicated Production VLAN for industrial equipment
• Separate Staff VLAN for general wireless devices
• 8 WiFi 7 (U7 Pro) access points providing seamless wireless coverage
• Static IP addressing and DHCP reservation management
• PLC integration
• SQL Server integration
• Production machine connectivity and testing
• Network optimisation and validation
• Fibre troubleshooting, polarity diagnosis and commissioning
• Full end-to-end testing to ensure uninterrupted production operation

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was diagnosing a fibre optic communication fault after installation. By methodically testing the network, replacing the correct optical components and ultimately identifying a fibre polarity issue within the patch panel, the 10Gb fibre backbone was successfully commissioned without disrupting production.

The result is a secure, resilient industrial network capable of supporting modern manufacturing operations while providing a solid foundation for future expansion.
