And we are off! The 17th International Disability Law Summer School kicks off today with a roundtable on the history of the UNCRPD with Stefan Tromel, Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo, Diana Samarasan, Theresia Degener and Pamela Molina Toledo facilitated by Emma Ward and Eilionóir Flynn.

This year's summer school marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We have a world class group of speakers and are welcoming over 160 participants in person and online for what promises to be an excellent 3 day event.

Behind the speakers are three screens with captions, videos and sign language interpreters.

Congratulations to our PhD graduate Dr Mary Harney who is the oldest ever PhD graduate from our Irish Centre for Human Rights, graduating at 77 years young. Mary's Phd title was 'Towards Best Practices in the Pedagogy of Human Rights Clinics: Movement Lawyering, its Emotional Impacts on Students and the Question of Teaching Resilience', supervised by Dr Maeve O'Rourke.

We are incredibly honoured to have had Mary as a PhD student and are grateful for all her contributions to the Centre including helping to teach our students about Ireland’s institutional and family separation abuses and the ongoing justice campaigns.

Mary is an award winning human rights defender and survivor of the Mother and Baby Institutions. Read more at: https://www.universityofgalway.ie/about-us/news-and-events/news-archive/2026/june/university-of-galway-celebrates-phd-graduate-born-in-mother-and-baby-home-1.html

Thinking about returning to education?

Jillian enrolled in the Access Programmes Business Foundation Course at University of Galway to see if she was still capable of studying after time away from education. What she gained was far more than she expected.

"I would highly recommend the Business Foundation course at the University of Galway to anyone considering a return to education, particularly if, like me, you've been away from studying for some time. I initially chose this course to test whether I was still cognitively capable of learning again, and it exceeded my expectations. The content was delivered in a clear and accessible way, making subjects like accounting and economics much easier to understand, and my confidence grew steadily throughout. The lecturers were supportive and approachable, which made a real difference to my experience. In addition to building my knowledge, I developed important study and time management skills. Overall, the course gave me a strong foundation for progressing to the BA in Commerce and, more importantly, the confidence to know that I can succeed."

If you're a mature student considering a return to education, our part-time Access Foundation Programmes provide a supportive pathway into higher education. Find out more here https://www.universityofgalway.ie/access/entryroutes/accessandfoundationprogrammes/
