Rebranding the parent company is hard enough. Then someone asks: "What about the sub-brands?"
This comes up more than you'd expect, and it's usually the question that stalls a rebrand before it properly starts. The business has a parent brand, plus two or three sub-brands, product lines, or divisions. Each one has its own logo, its own colours, sometimes its own website. Nobody's sure how they all fit together.
The fear is that rebranding the parent means rebuilding everything underneath it too. That feels overwhelming and expensive, so the whole project gets shelved.
In practice, it's rarely that dramatic. There are a few common approaches:
- Unified: one brand system with subtle variations for sub-brands. Consistent, efficient, easy to manage. Works when the sub-brands don't need their own identity in the market.
- Endorsed: the parent brand acts as a badge of trust, but each sub-brand has its own visual identity. Works when the sub-brands serve genuinely different audiences.
- Standalone: sub-brands operate independently with little visible connection to the parent. Less common, but right for some businesses.
The answer depends on how your customers actually experience the business. Do they interact with the parent brand or the sub-brand first? Do they know the parent exists? Does the parent's reputation help or hinder the sub-brand?
That's a discovery conversation, not a guessing game.
