Firstly, ask yourself what is the end goal of learning to code? The goal is to solve problems with code. When a company looks to hire a programmer this is what the company has in mind. They are looking for a problem solver who can generate solutions with code. The word programmer is synonymous with problem-solver. So, your goal as a coder is to get good at solving problems.

Now, take a step back and think about your learning path as a newbie to coding. Keep in mind the goal: to get good at problem solving. If your learning path only involves consuming information (whether that is from books or videos) then you are not going to reach your end goal. Your learning path must involve writing code and being challenged in order to get there.

This is the top reason that students fail to make progress. Too much emphasis is put on consuming information and too little time is spent on practical development of problems.
