A few of months ago I went to London to complete my certification to become the Republic of Ireland’s FIRST and ONLY Certified Brand Architect, with Level C. Studying under the guidance of global brand leader Marty Neumeier, and his partner Andy Starr, it has been an incredible, powerful and rewarding experience.

Only a couple of weeks ago I got my certificate through, which reminded me of what all this has meant to me and how far I’ve come on my journey since starting CUBE Design in 2008. It’s not only a personal achievement for me, it also means I can now give clients so much more value in helping them to achieve their brand and business goals.

The definition of a Brand Architect is;
‘Brand Architects have a deep understanding of dimensional thinking. They tend to see problems in their full complexity – not as flat, linear, or static, but as spatial, simultaneous, and evolving. They Look beneath the surface of the brand to find the points of connection within the company’s business, then use these connections to blueprint ecosystems of value. Their work is not only strategic but generative, synergistic, and driven by customer insights. Strategists solve problems others can’t solve. Architects solve problems others can’t see’.

I am very proud to share this stage with only a handful of Brand Architects around the world. Together with my teams we solved a problem for Dr.Oetker, yep the frozen pizza people, and our collaborative solution could make a huge difference to the company.

Since the pre-covid days of 2020, I have been involved as a co-conspirator in a new web platform called What Not To Do. Along with my co-conspirators Kevin J Reid and Amit Wadhwa

What Not To Do is is a fresh, fun look at failure and source of life hacks. The platform is where trusted experts share what not to do replacing the ‘do as I say’ approach with the more honest ‘don’t do as I did’ one. It is about embracing the negative and illustrating other pathways to success.

We have had great fun in creating this business model and brand, which we launched in the past two weeks (and by the way we failed at that).

For the generation that looks to Google for any information they need in their lives, 'What Not To Do' is a source of life hacks and valuable lessons, channelled through podcasts, and articles, written by people who have had the experiences, shared on a web platform. It is about embracing the negative and illustrating other pathways to success. 'What Not To Do' is where the curious go to learn from other people’s life lessons.

We began with our brand strategy workshops which helped to define the framework and direction of the brand. Once we had that direction it made the visual expression of the brand easier to define. The 'What Not To Do' Logo was created deliberately off balance to reflect the failures that this brand is founded on. The ‘a’ and the ‘e’ were worked into the negative space to illustrate how the information was very much ‘wanted’ by its audience, even if not publicly admitted.

Borrowing from the style of pop art and punk, the brand identity is fun, bright and playful. It also plays on the idea of traditional media information sources being modernised through 'What Not To Do', using textures of old printed newspapers, old maps and radios.

'What Not To Do' has just been launched, and you can find the platform here, whatnottodo.ie There are many great articles written by our expert contributors, which I’m sure you will find a very interesting and entertaining read.

Are you involved in hospitality or tourism sectors?
To support tourism and hospitality businesses to re-open safely and effectively, Fáilte Ireland has introduced a COVID-19 Adaptation Fund which is designed to contribute to the costs incurred by these businesses as they implement Fáilte Ireland’s Guidelines for Re-opening.
Eligible businesses can apply for adaptation grants from now until 8 October 2020.

In line with the Government’s Roadmap for the Re-opening of Business and Society, tourism and hospitality businesses began opening their doors from the 29 June. To support these businesses to re-open safely and effectively, Fáilte Ireland has taken a three-step approach to re-opening.
