While many brands wait for regulation to force their hand, retail went ahead. Tesco has launched GS1 Digital Link powered codes on selected products, moving from the old linear barcode to 2D on the actual shelf. GS1 UK calls it the shift from pilots into everyday retail.
That is a massive signal to the industry that we should all be watching. When a retailer of that scale commits, it does not stop at its own products. The expectation flows down to the brands it stocks. And retailer demand moves on a buyer's timeline, far faster and far less forgiving than any EU delegated act. There is no 18 month transition on a purchase order.
So the question stops being about Brussels and starts being about your biggest account. When they ask for GS1 ready, scannable product data, are you the supplier who already has it, or the one asking for more time while a competitor on the same shelf does not need to?
A 2D code is going onto your packaging in the next couple of years regardless, because the retail rails are being rebuilt around it. The only choice you control is whether you are ready early and using the code, or ready late and scrambling.
Is your brand ready for the shelf you are about to be selling on? More brands are behind on this than realise it. Where does your category sit?
