How can law firms in Ireland become sustainable?

When we think of sustainable business, we think of manufacturing. Can we source our raw materials more ethically, and reduce waste in the packaging? We think catering or grocery retail – can we reduce food waste? We don’t think about law firms.

But any business can become more sustainable, and we will only win the war against climate change when everyone becomes involved.

A law firm is not just one legal eagle arguing before a judge. It is a whole business, with a huge backroom team of secretaries, paralegals, administrators, lawyers, and managers. A big law firm can employ over a hundred people, and the smallest could still hold half a dozen employees.

And the law generates huge volumes of paperwork.

So perhaps we should think about law firms when we think about sustainability.

πŸ’‘ Waste Management Regulations Ireland

πŸ“… With 2022 on the horizon, we have published this helpful blog post on what the current waste management regulations are in Ireland, and how you can adapt to become a sustainable business!

πŸ‘‰ You would be surprised how long a history environmental regulations have. They go back not decades but centuries, preceding the industrial revolution by hundreds of years.

πŸ‘‰ In 1306 King Edward 1 of England introduced a whole raft of regulations, designed to reduce smog, prevent pollution of the Thames, and to control flooding. The problems have not changed! We are still battling air and water pollution, and rising water levels.

πŸ‘‰ What has changed is the scale of the problem. Since the industrial revolution we have been losing the battle, but the war is not lost. And in recent years tighter regulations, both national and international, are allowing us to hope we might yet get on top of the problem of waste management.

πŸ’‘ A Waste Action Plan for a Circular Economy

πŸ‘‰ A Zero Waste Economy is one in which reusing, repairing, and recycling (all the Rs, but different Rs than the traditional triad!) are the norm. It’s a circular economy, and one that Ireland and the EU are striving to move towards.

πŸ‘‰ A circular, or zero waste, economy is the green way to go. It will help tackle climate change, help preserve dwindling resources, but it will also save money. It is a win from all sides.

πŸ‘‰ The concept has been around for more than a decade now, but got off to a slow start. In 2010 nearly 500 million tonnes of waste that could have been recycled or reused were buried in landfill or incinerated in Europe. Every year that figure drops.

What is a zero waste city?

Right, there is a mind-blowing concept. We know what a zero waste company is – an ethical company that has put systems into place to manage their waste. The idea is that no waste goes into landfill – it is recycled, reused, composted, or otherwise dealt with. Now imagine that concept being extended to an entire city.

We all know what a light well is. It is an open space in a building that is left unroofed to allow light and air in. It reduces lighting bills, and helps control the temperature. And it is passive – no power is used.

And we all know the alternative to light wells used by many people who don’t have the budget for fancy architecture, but who want all those benefits. It is a skylight.

There are two sides to sustainable tourism in Ireland.

The first is the experience of the traveller. How do you see the world without leaving a big sooty footprint.

The second side is from the tourist trade itself; how do you provide an experience that is green, eco-friendly and sustainable?

πŸ’‘ Zero waste might look like a daunting goal, but any goal becomes achievable when you break it down into intermediate steps. When you set out on your zero waste mission you need to look at the particular circumstances of your business.

πŸ‘‰ It’s not all about the rubbish you produce. In fact, it is often about the decisions you take long before that. Make the right choices, and it is not a question of how to dispose of waste ethically. The waste might not be produced at all.
