๐ฅ Optimizing Performance: Server Build & Fixing a Thermal Disaster ๐ฅ
Recently, we worked on a rack-mounted server for a comms cabinet. The system had already been assembled by someone else, featuring an Intel i9-14900K and an RTX 4090โa powerful setup, but with serious thermal and stability issues.
๐จ The problems we found:
โ CPU hitting 100ยฐC within seconds under full load
โ XMP profile disabled (impacting RAM performance)
โ Resizable BAR turned off (reducing GPU efficiency)
โ BIOS outdated, causing incorrect voltage offsets (known issue with Intel 13th & 14th gen CPUs, fixed in BIOS updates)
โ SSD firmware outdated, leading to cache management issues
โ System experiencing random crashes
๐ Our fixes:
โ
Updated BIOS and applied the correct voltage offset
โ
Enabled XMP & Resizable BAR for optimal performance
โ
Flashed new firmware for SSD stability
โ
Replaced Noctua air cooling (which couldnโt handle the heat) with an AIO liquid cooler
โ
Installed a special 1700 socket bracket to prevent CPU warping and ensure perfect contact with the cooler
๐ก Final results: CPU now maxes out at 74ยฐC under full load, and the system is rock-solid. Another build saved from poor assembly!
