Time to give AE credit for his talent
Diane Beale’s quote from the article “Time to Give AE His Due,” which discusses the Irish painter, poet, social activist, and mystic George William Russell, reflects on the artistic expression of the Celtic spirit in Russell’s work.
Diane suggests that Russell successfully captured the essence of the Celtic spirit characterised by dreaminess and a yearning for something beyond the physical realms of land and sea in his paintings. The use of the term “longing” implies a deep, emotional connection to something intangible, perhaps a spiritual or mystical dimension we all come from, an idea very in-keeping with Æ’s belief of the connection between ourselves and something much larger.
Diane praises Russell’s artistic talent and vision and commends his ability to be able to translate this ethereal quality onto a tangible and visual medium, to convey the dreamy and transcendent aspects of the Celtic spirit in his art, emphasising the mystical and contemplative nature of his work.
