🌍 When new regulations reshape global supply chains, who makes sure producers are not left behind? Smallholders sit at the very start of many agricultural supply chains, yet they are often the most vulnerable when new regulations come into force.

From our work in the field, many farmers still lack formal land titles, digital farm records, access to knowledge & practical training, and access to financial inclusion. Without the right support, these gaps can create real risks of exclusion from global markets. That’s why first mile engagement matters. 🌱

With , we support agribusinesses across Indonesia, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, to engage directly with smallholders, helping translate complex requirements into practical, on-farm action, through on-the-ground extension services. The focus isn’t just data collection, but building trust, reducing risk early, and making the complex achievable at the source.

Through KoltiSkills, we support:
🗺️ Supply chain mapping & farmer verification – strengthening transparency from the source
🌳 risk assessment – identifying land-use risks for deforestation-free compliance
🌱 Risk mitigation coaching – helping address potential risks early across the
📜 Land legality support – helping farmers document land ownership or use rights
🔍 Product traceability – connecting farm-level data to global systems
📦 Segregation & compliance training – ensuring commodities meet regulatory requirements

’s contribution to global output is projected to rise from 13% to 19% over the next decade. But here’s the harder question: Will it lead in , or fall behind because of it?

Across the region, conversations around traceability often circle back to the same concerns: cost, digital readiness, regulatory uncertainty, and whether the value truly reaches producers. These assumptions continue to shape how quickly move toward compliance.

In our latest session, industry leaders working across East Africa’s export ecosystems challenged common assumptions slowing traceability adoption: cost, digital capability, and who benefits most.

👤 Susan Atyang (aBi Development) reminded us, “Most premium markets now require evidence food is safe, legal, and deforestation-free.”
👤 Waithera Muriithi (Cafe Africa Uganda) highlighted that once producers see value, digital adoption accelerates.
👤 Kiptoo Eliud (Diageo) shared how traceability data is used to improve quality and income for smallholder farmers.
👤 F***y BUTLER (Koltiva) brought it home: “Technology alone won’t solve traceability, the human element matters.”

So what’s really holding progress back?

As global markets tighten traceability requirements, the first mile has become the critical point of intervention. 🌍 What does effective first mile traceability look like when applied in a fragmented, small-scale ?

Through the Yellowfin Tuna Traceability Pilot, Koltiva, appointed by The Meloy Fund, Ocean Union, and Laut Biru Seafood, implemented and tested a digital, -aligned traceability model for wild-capture yellowfin tuna in Bitung, North Sulawesi, demonstrating how Indonesia’s tuna sector can move from fragmented documentation toward scalable, market-ready .

Over the course of the pilot, the system enabled:
🚢 Registration of vessels and fishers
🧾 Digital recording of landing transactions, delivery to the factory, and processing through to the final product
🐟 A feature, allowing buyers to tip fishers directly

“Our partnership with Koltiva on the traceability initiative for Ocean Union’s yellowfin tuna supply chain reflects Meloy Fund’s commitment to scalable, technology‑enabled sustainability solutions. Koltiva’s KoltiTrace platform provides the interoperability, data integrity, and end‑to‑end transparency needed to meet evolving global standards and unlock market access for responsible seafood. We chose to invest in and work with Koltiva because their human‑centered approach empowers small‑scale producers, strengthens ESG outcomes, and demonstrates how digital traceability can drive genuine impact across complex supply chains.” - Dale Galvin, Deliberate Capital’s Founder and CEO

By adapting to the operational realities of handline fisheries, the pilot replaced fragmented, paper-based processes with structured, data aligned with global buyer and regulatory expectations.

🔍 The initiative demonstrates how first-mile digitisation can strengthen due diligence, reduce risk in complex , and create the foundation for inclusive incentive mechanisms that reward verified, responsible fishing practices.

What does real look like when every farm, every transaction, and every payment is digitally verified and audit-ready? Supply chain compliance today goes beyond mapping plots. It requires interoperable systems that capture data, producer profiles, transaction records, and financial flows within one connected architecture, aligned with regulatory frameworks such as , , , and other global reporting standards.

Here’s how Koltiva operationalizes end-to-end traceability through the ecosystem:

📍 establishes farm-level spatial traceability using GPS mapping and polygon data as the foundation for origin verification, risk screening, and geolocation compliance.

📱 serves as a one-stop farmer app and integrated farmer management platform, enabling real-time data collection, helping manage their agricultural activities, track productivity, and access training resources.

📊 digitally records farm-to-warehouse transactions with transaction-level recording and supplier verification, ensuring traceable and verified procurement flows.

💳 closes the loop by embedding traceable financial transactions into the supply chain ecosystem—enabling digital payments, incentive premium disbursement, and transparent financial records that support financial inclusion while reinforcing supply chain integrity.

Because every and every commodity is different, our solutions are never one-size-fits-all.

In a global meta-analysis of 3,075 comparisons, systems delivered 23% higher biodiversity and ecosystem services than conventional agriculture (NCBI, 2025), demonstrating that conservation efforts are more effective when trees are integrated into production landscapes. Importantly, these environmental gains go hand in hand with economic benefits, as agroforestry enhances smallholders’ livelihoods through diversified production and more resilient income sources.

This approach lies at the heart of conservation-driven production landscapes. In this spirit, Konservasi Indonesia partners with Koltiva to strengthen cocoa and coffee agroforestry practices across some of Indonesia’s most critical ecosystems: Batang Toru Forest Ecosystem & Batang Angkola (North Sumatra), Gedepahala Landscape (West Java), and the Crown Jewel of Papua (West Papua).

Chosen for our deep agronomic and agroforestry expertise, we support Konservasi Indonesia through:
🌱 Assess farmer practices, plot conditions, soil health, crop , and environmental risks to identify improvement areas and inform training and interventions.
🌳 Establish and manage agroforestry demo plots to showcase cocoa and coffee systems, combining productivity, biodiversity, and conservation outcomes.
🌾 Support intercropping, replanting, and farm rehabilitation using improved cocoa and coffee clones and diverse tree species to strengthen climate resilience and farmer incomes.
🌍 Enhance soil quality, reduce erosion, and improve ecosystem functions through nature-based agroforestry and -aligned farming practices.
🎓 Deliver farmer training, learning materials, Training of Trainers, and a long-term agroforestry roadmap integrating conservation, livelihoods, and market access.

“Conservation is not only about keeping forests sustainable, but about ensuring communities live prosperously and in harmony with nature. Through agroforestry-based restoration, we replant hope, restoring landscapes while creating opportunities for prosperity that grows alongside sustainable ecosystems.” — Doni Latuparisa, M.Si, Batang Toru Program Manager, Konservasi Indonesia

📍🌱 Fieldwork is where traceability becomes real, turning commitment into daily practice on the ground in Cameroon. Recently in Cameroon, our team, led by Doumbia Issa Abdoul Aziz, spent four days in the field with Socfin, working closely with local teams to strengthen day-to-day traceability practices across operations.

Since last year, Socfin has chosen to partner with Koltiva as part of that journey. This visit marked an important shift from readiness to day-to-day application in their operations, making sure teams feel confident using the system and aligned with evolving requirements.

The sessions focused on hands-on use of Koltiva’s tools and collaborative problem-solving tailored to Cameroon’s field realities. Over four days, we trained Socfin’s teams on the system’s functionality, including farmer profiling, survey collection, plot surveys, and GPS mapping, followed by practical mapping exercises.

We then moved to a session covering dashboards, maps, land-use tracking, and Cameroon-specific workflow guidance, concluding with project implementation planning. Real adoption happens only when these tools match how teams work on the ground.

As expectations around robust traceability become more concrete, this kind of field engagement helps turn commitments into consistent, repeatable practice across the supply chain.

“Being in the field allows us to listen, adapt, and make sure the approach fits the local reality. Traceability only works when the people using it feel confident and supported,” said Doumbia Issa Abdoul Aziz, our Regional Product Operations and Customer Support Lead.

Even with 90% (or more) mill-level traceability, your supply chain remains fully exposed to deforestation risk unless you reach full Traceability to Plantation (TTP). Partial visibility may look impressive on paper, but without full TTP, the real risks remain hidden. So how will your business bridge this critical gap?

For years, the industry has relied on a 50 km radius buffer to estimate sourcing origins, a compliance shortcut that offers convenience, but not certainty. But as enforcement tightens and expectations rise, this workaround is no longer enough. What was once an acceptable approximation has now become a costly liability.

Achieving isn’t just a regulatory challenge; it’s an operational one. Across the globe, 7 million smallholders supply 2,200 mills (Food Navigator, 2025). Yet, a large share of these smallholders remain unmapped, creating critical data blind spots that hinder full TTP. Combined with informal intermediaries and fragmented data flows, scaling TTP visibility has become one of the most complex puzzles in the .

💡 It’s time to move beyond assumptions and toward verifiable TTP data at scale. Discover the operational playbook in our upcoming webinar!
