Reports tell us what we knew at a point in time. The Islamic Social Economy now needs a living intelligence system.

This post is a sequel to my earlier appeal to bring back the Islamic Social Finance Reports.
The ISFRs played a pioneering role. They helped document and frame a sector that had long remained under-researched: zakah, waqf, sadaqah, Islamic microfinance and the broader Islamic Social Economy.

But if we bring back periodic reports, one question must be addressed honestly:
How do we reduce the time, cost and fragmentation involved in collecting reliable global data?

This is where GISED (https://gised.app/), the Global Islamic Social Economy Database, may offer a practical way forward.

GISED is a prototype designed to support future Islamic Social Finance Reports and similar knowledge-sharing initiatives through:

As the IsDB family gathers in Baku, here is one appeal from the heart: bring back the Islamic Social Finance Reports.

The IsDB Group Annual Meetings are being held this week in Baku, alongside IsDBI’s 20th Global Forum on Islamic Finance.

The themes could not be more relevant: regional integration, sustainable prosperity and the future of Islamic finance. And this is precisely why Islamic Social Finance deserves renewed attention.

The Islamic Social Finance Reports, launched by IsDBI/IRTI, helped document and frame a sector that had long been under-researched: zakah, awqaf, sadaqah, Islamic microfinance and the broader not-for-profit Islamic Social Economy.

I had the privilege of serving IsDBI as Lead Economist and leading the ISFR project from its inception. Looking back, I feel even more strongly today that this work should not remain dormant.

The reports helped move Islamic Social Finance from scattered institutional experience into global development discourse. They were later referenced in World Bank publications, UN-hosted material and other policy-facing studies.
But today, the need is even greater.

The field has expanded. The challenges have multiplied. The data remain scattered. Lessons from zakah, waqf and Islamic Social Economy institutions across the world need to be documented, compared and shared.

This is my appeal to IsDBI, IsDB Group, zakah and waqf authorities, regulators, universities, development partners, researchers and practitioners:
Let us come together to bring back the Islamic Social Finance Reports, or build an even stronger successor platform for global sharing of data, evidence and institutional learning.

The field has grown.
The need has deepened.
The responsibility is collective.

Happy to see the name of IBF Net — The Islamic Business and Finance Network — recalled once again at Kazan Forum 2026.

Over a quarter of a century ago, IBF Net began as one of the earliest online communities in Islamic business and finance. Seeing that journey continue to evolve into new partnerships and collaborations is deeply satisfying.

My sincere thanks to Br Umar Munshi, Advisor to IBF Net Group, for representing us at the Forum and for facilitating the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Netversity International of IBF Net Group and Chechen State University.

Although unavoidable constraints prevented my physical participation this year, I am grateful to the organizers of Kazan Forum for their invitation and for building such an important platform for meaningful dialogue and cooperation. I look forward to joining personally in the coming years.
The cooperation agreement opens exciting possibilities in educational program development, joint research, expert exchange, digital learning solutions and broader capacity building in Islamic finance and partnership finance.
