Next week, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our company.

For the final chapter of these ten weeks, we asked our team one simple question:
What does Bishop & Co. mean to you in one word?

Their answers included:
Community. Friendship. Cohesion. Flexibility. Work-life balance.

This is just a confirmation of what we already saw at the end of last year, when we conducted a company-wide culture survey. In 80% of the responses, our colleagues used the same words: community, friends, colleagues, team. Always followed by positive adjectives like: kind, understanding, friendly, outstanding, motivating or amazing.
The survey made it clear what they see as our strengths: a stable, safe workplace; an exceptional, close-knit community; a great work environment; real flexibility and work-life balance; and a positive, healthy culture built on trust, with people always at the centre.
This is what Bishop means to us.

Over the past ten weeks, we have shared different stories from the past decade about our founding, offices, partnerships, and lessons we learned. But at the centre of it all – every time – are the people.

People with different expertise, personalities, and backgrounds. People who join us as strangers become a tight-knit community. Who make coffee together after lunch, go hiking on weekends, start a book club, launch a beer brewing group, organise beer pong championships, keep on talking till 4 am on a random summer Friday night on the balcony. Then on Monday morning, sit down and build software for healthcare, research, and education initiatives.

This is exactly what we set out to build in 2016, when Zoli founded this company on the belief that quality and culture are not mutually exclusive.
Ten years later, our team and the data are here to affirm it.

Every company name tells a story.
Do you want to hear ours?

Well, in 2016, when we set out to name our company, we did not do it alone. We turned to the people around us: friends, family, and even the partners we had at the time, inviting them into the process.

Their task was to send us name ideas for the company.
To make it fun, we offered small rewards: gifts, dinners, and, of course, the ultimate pride of naming an actual company. Over 100 ideas were submitted. With a lot of work, we narrowed them down to 10 finalists. Then, just at the finish line, a friend suggested one more. eyes

Bishop.

Actually, it was a nickname, the nickname of our founder, Zoli, taken from a movie, where it belonged to an ethical hacker. We added it to the list, and it ended up winning by a landslide.

So now you know: Bishop was Zoli’s nickname, and Bishop & Co. became the company, which shows that prioritising team well-being and success does not have to be a trade-off. blue heart

Over the past ten years, the name has grown to mean more than a nickname to us…but that is a story for next week. 😉

Only three weeks until our 10th birthday. 🤩 🥳 This week, we are focusing on a trait that has guided us through the past ten years: curiosity.

There is no doubt that software engineering has changed dramatically over the past decade. Frameworks come and go, regulations evolve, and just when you think you know what is coming next, AI rewrites the rules once again. It can be tempting to choose comfortable, familiar solutions, technologies, and frameworks. However, staying curious enables us to keep exploring new domains and technologies. Curiosity reframes change as a challenge rather than a threat, and it brings people together.

Here are three ways we stay curious at Bishop:
🤝 We learn alongside our community.
We have our own meetups, the Bishop Academy Open series. We also enjoy co-organising or hosting meetups with friends, such as the Cloud Native Szeged or SzegedSync Meetups.
📚️ We share our knowledge internally.
Through Bishop Academies, colleagues teach each other about topics they are passionate about. Sometimes it is a one-off session; sometimes it is a full series, such as our AI-themed academies. We also have in-house mentors who share their experience and knowledge with their mentees. On the one hand, mentees can develop their soft and hard skills, while mentors can gain experience in leadership and teaching.
🧠 We also support individual curiosity.
We encourage and support colleagues to find conferences or to take online courses that will help their professional development. We subscribe to newsletters and publications, and we have a company library.

Most of what we knew in 2016 is already out of date. Most of what we know now will also become outdated. Curiosity is the only part of the job that does not expire.

We are four weeks away from our 10th birthday. We have already shared the most valuable lesson we learned; now it is time for the hardest one: speed without quality is a risk we cannot afford to take.

Would you give this to your child? Would you feel safe letting them use this software? Would you trust it enough to make decisions about their care? These are the questions one of our colleagues asks when reviewing any software or new technology.

AI has reshaped how software is written, reviewed, and released. Tasks that once took months now take weeks. It is exciting, but it also raises the stakes, especially in the fields we work in. We support medical, digital health, and pharmaceutical research companies, where mistakes are not measured in lost time but in patient outcomes. In these industries, every release must meet strict regulatory requirements, and every change and decision must be traceable.

So the hardest lesson has not been, “How do we keep up with AI?” It has been: how do we use it to move faster without losing the standards these regulated domains demand and patients deserve?

It takes constant effort to find the balance between innovation and regulation. In February, we hosted an all-day AI hackathon for our team, during which we developed an application for internal use. It was a fun and exciting day! This was a low-stakes use case, but even so, simply adopting a vibe-coded solution is not feasible because oversight and code quality cannot be neglected. We cannot prioritise convenience and end up with solutions we do not fully understand.

Naturally, when it comes to our partners and healthcare solutions, the stakes are thousands of times higher. This is why, for us, safety always comes first: at the other end of our code are human lives.

So, what is our secret?
Love!
Well… perhaps not.

This recipe requires different ingredients:
1️⃣ We showed up not as vendors checking boxes, but as partners learning the language of our partners' world.
At the start of every project, we immerse ourselves in their respective domains, from blood banking, through pharmaceutical research, to e-learning. We focus on understanding their domains, day-to-day realities, challenges, and how the latter ones impact their operations and workflows.
2️⃣ We build relationships face-to-face.
We invite partners to our office to meet and work alongside the people behind their project. This also gives them a chance to get to know our whole team, get a taste of the atmosphere, culture, and take part in our habits, such as the after-lunch coffee ritual, or an occasional party.
3️⃣ We evolve alongside our partners.
We are a smaller, agile, and flexible company, so we are able to respond quickly to growth needs, and help our partners adapt to rapidly changing market demands.
4️⃣ We invest in continuous learning.
Through Bishop Academies, courses, conferences, and mentoring, our team stays up to date with the latest guidelines and technologies, ensuring our solutions are safe, optimized, and future-ready.

We are grateful that startups and big enterprises, both EU and international ones, choose us as their trusted software engineering partner. We will continue to do our best, build solutions that matter, and deliver.

There would be no Bishop & Co., and no 10th anniversary, without our team. We’ve already talked about the importance of community: now we want to show how we built ours through social events. And they’re anything but run-of-the-mill, since we like to put our own spin on things. 😉

It’s a cold winter night. The wind rattles the branches, and black ice covers the ground. Inside a small white cottage, a group is fighting for nothing less than the future of humanity, under the watchful gaze of the experiment’s supervisors.

No, this isn’t from a book, it’s from one of our winter retreats. Cinti and Fruzsi created an escape room experience for the whole team. We gathered clues, deciphered codes, and solved puzzles, all in search of a cure to save humankind from an alien virus (as these things tend to go).

So now, that you get what we meant by putting our own spin on things. Here are just a few of our other favourite memories:

🍻 There’s nothing like a cold beer on a summer evening, but it’s even better when it’s your own. Since we love craft beer, one time we decided to create Bishop Beer. It was a true team effort that required patience, but in the end, sipping and sharing our own beer made it all worthwhile.

🎲 Team-building games are never boring, especially if Jani made them: guessing team names from Wikipedia articles, identifying movies from terrible plot summaries, and creating memes about ourselves, to mention some of the best ones. 😆

💃 We can't travel to Rio, so we host an annual carnival, complete with creative and hilarious costumes, and a competition for the main prize: a dinner coupon.

🐣 Every year, we organise an egg hunt. One or two people hide chocolate eggs and bunnies around the office, while the rest compete for the glory of finding the most treats. When we say there’s no couch left unturned… we mean it. 😂

🍝 We love travelling and good food, so we have international cooking nights, where we make everything from pizza and pasta to burgers from scratch.

🤝 Besides these, we’ve built small crews around shared interests. We love hiking, so we organise trips across the country. We love board games, so we turn national holidays into full-day gaming sessions.

Building a close-knit community like this takes time, and it remains a continuous priority for us. But in the end, it’s worth it. We come into the office each day knowing that friends are waiting for us. We know that we can share our honest opinions, challenge each other’s ideas, resolve conflicts, and work under pressure because we already have a solid foundation.

During COVID, the world faced challenges none of us had experienced. People, families, teams, and entire communities were affected, and the social and economic impacts are still being felt today. It was a time of uncertainty, loss, and profound difficulty.

Amid this, we focused on supporting one another as a team. Like everyone, we had to adapt quickly to new ways of working and living. Our CEO, Zoli, even delivered our colleagues' monitors to their homes to ensure they have a good setup for this new chapter. While we were fortunate to work from home and stay safe, we remained mindful that many others faced much harder circumstances.

To stay connected, we found little ways to create a sense of safety and a touch of normality. We cooked together over video calls, played board games online, and created our own small contests. These moments didn’t solve the challenges around us, but they helped us stay calm and keep going.
We are grateful this chapter has passed, but it showed us our team is resilient and flexible. With shared effort, we preserved the community we have built and overcame challenges we have never faced before.

Every journey contains a multitude of lessons and challenges. This is the most important lesson we have learned over the past 10 years:

Community matters most.
This is not just a phrase we like to use; it is a fact we have seen repeatedly:
👉 Happy, supported employees create satisfied clients.
👉 Motivated teams not only deliver, but create long-term value.

When people feel trusted, connected to their team, and inspired, it is reflected in the quality of their work, the partnerships we build, and the results we achieve.

Our partners experience this as well. We invite them to our office, and they enjoy working alongside the people who build and create the system they rely on. The atmosphere and strong bonds we foster are tangible, and this draws people in. This trust, built through face-to-face interactions, our results, open communication, and the quality we provide, is what keeps our partners with us for over 7 years on average.

As we look ahead at the current technological landscape, we believe this will not change. If anything, it matters even more.

We’re celebrating our tenth birthday this summer, and today we want to share the story of our office(s).

Our office is not just a physical space; it is a community space. From the very beginning, it was important for us to create an environment where our team feels motivated, connected, and inspired, to have a place that supports creativity, open communication, and teamwork.

In 2016, we started on Tisza Lajos Boulevard with only two rooms. It was a cosy space that we loved, but by 2017 our team had already grown, and we needed something bigger. That’s when we moved to Kárász Street.

Since then, our space has continued to evolve alongside our team. We have always believed that our office should adapt to us, not the other way around. So our needs shaped our environment, and over time, it literally expanded from room to room as we grew.

Then COVID hit, we worked from home for a while, and when we returned to the office, we realised how much we value working together and how important the sense of community is within our company. In 2022, we decided to renovate, aiming to create a lighter, more spacious environment with a larger community area.

The renovation itself was a team effort. We packed up the office together and even played football in the empty rooms. When the main renovation was completed, we did not stop there. Step by step, we added more personality to the space, such as our hand-painted accent walls and photos from retreats and parties.

Today, our office is truly more than just a workplace. It is where most of our team-building events take place, where we proudly host our partners and the local developer community, and where we support initiatives such as HiSchool, Amigos and Rotary.

We are still growing and evolving, so our office is not final either; it will continue to change and transform along with us.

We’re celebrating our 10th birthday in June, so we’re sharing 10 stories and lessons we’ve learned along the way! 🥳

Now, where else could we start but at the beginning?

Bishop & Co. was founded in 2016 on the principle of being a people-centred software engineering company. Zoli started the company to prove that quality and culture can go hand in hand, and that success doesn’t have to come at the expense of the team, atmosphere, or our values!

From the very beginning, we’ve focused on supporting medical and digital health projects, aiming to improve society through our expertise as software engineers. We partner with innovative teams and help them reach their goals because their success is the best recommendation we could ask for.

Our long-standing partnerships and the continuous trust from our partners show us that prioritising team wellbeing and quality over quantity isn’t just an ideal, it’s a value people truly appreciate and support.

In the past ten years, we met brilliant and committed people, moved and redesigned our office, faced COVID, and continuously adapted to a rapidly changing industry. Today, we continue building unique, high-quality software solutions and strong communities, without losing sight of what truly matters: the people building and using our software.
