When analysing foundation slabs, one common question is whether the software can simulate uplift, where part of the slab loses contact with the soil and only compressive soil reactions are transferred.

The answer is yes – but a nonlinear analysis is required.

The process is simple:
🔺 Open the nonlinear analysis dialog
🔺 Enable nonlinear material behaviour
🔺 Run the analysis
🔺 The program automatically deactivates soil contact where uplift occurs

Unlike linear analysis, where the soil contact transfers both compression and tension, the nonlinear model only transfers compressive soil reactions. This allows AXISVM to realistically simulate partial loss of contact and foundation uplift.

A useful tool whenever uplift or separation between the soil and structure may influence the design.

🔺 Load Symbol and Labeling Settings Posibilities to Support Clear Documentation Creation

📄 In larger models, a single load case may contain numerous nodal loads and surface loads, which can make the clear overview and documentation of the individual loads more difficult, if everything should be shown in one drawing.

💡 Let’s see what we can do!

Among the various settings, we have several options for adjusting the appearance of graphical symbols and labels.

Line Thickness/Size and Color of Load Symbols, Labels:
1️⃣ Preferences → Graphical Symbols → Loads; Labels
Load symbol display factors (overall size):

2️⃣ Model Options→ Drawing
In this case, the display and labeling of surface loads have been significantly reduced. By configuring color coding, the interpretation of these loads also becomes much clearer again.

👉 In addition, the transparency of labels can also be adjusted.

💡 Support Friday: Why do “unselected” loads change as well?

We recieved a question where customers experience that when modifying concentrated loads placed on beam elements, other loads on the same beam also appear to change, even though they were not explicitly selected.

At first glance, this may seem unexpected — but it is actually the result of a deliberate program behavior.

📌 What is happening?
If the beam element itself is selected together with the loads, the software treats this as a selection of all nodal loads located on that beam. As a result, all of them are modified — regardless of whether each individual load was explicitly selected.

⚙️ Why is it designed this way?
This behavior was introduced to simplify the modeling workflow. With a single selection, users can efficiently modify all loads on a given beam element at once, saving time and reducing repetitive actions.

✏️ Can loads be modified individually?
Yes. If you need to modify loads one by one, you can do so by ensuring that the beam element itself is not selected. In this case, only the explicitly selected loads will be affected.

📌 Steel Design in AXISVM – Cross-Section Classification
N+M or Max. Stress Classification?

AXISVM performs cross-section classification according to Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-1, 5.2).

The program evaluates the section geometry and the actual stress distribution developing along the member.

✔ examines multiple cross-sections along the member
✔ performs classification separately for each load combination
✔ assigns the most unfavorable class to the member
✔ performs iterative effective cross-section calculation for Class 4 sections

❓ But what is the difference between N+M and Max. Stress classification?

In bending, one part of the cross-section is in compression while the other is in tension.
The tension zone has a beneficial effect on stability, making the plates less prone to local buckling.

💡 However, a small axial force may also occur in a predominantly bending member.
Near the point of zero bending moment, this may cause the entire web height to become compressed, leading to a less favorable cross-section classification.

In both cases, the program performs the classification based on the actual stress distribution resulting from the combined effect of axial force and bending.

🔹 N+M Classification
- Applies the most unfavorable class from all evaluated cross-sections along the member.
- Can always be applied.

🔹 Max. Stress Classification
- Applies the class determined at the location of maximum normal stress.
- Can be advantageous when the structural behavior is still predominantly governed by bending.
- Prevents a local compression zone from becoming governing for the classification.

Discover the capabilities of the AXISVM SOIL module in our upcoming webinar.

🔺 We will introduce how the module can be used to model soil–structure interaction more accurately, including the calculation of stresses and strains induced in the soil by structural loads.

💻 The webinar will also present a new feature available in AXISVM X8: the ability to consider the initial state of the soil, accounting for its self-weight and previous loads. This means the soil can already be under stress, while the corresponding deformations are assumed to have already occurred and are treated as zero in the analysis.

🎬 As our 3rd and final video made together with BUCC from the Netherlands, we are showcasing how a custom-built Grasshopper plugin connected to AXISVM is used to define a steel frame structure in real time.

The key advantage is the immediate parametric control: both the arc span and the height of the frame can be adjusted instantly, while the structural model updates automatically in the background.

This is where the Grasshopper-based workflow truly stands out — enabling fast design iterations and seamless structural feedback within a single parametric environment.
