🔎 Expert Spotlight: What do we test in a critical system?
In a critical system, testing is not simply about checking whether a feature works.
The real question is: what happens when something goes wrong?
We test the expected - and the unexpected:
• Functional behavior: does the system do exactly what it should?
• Interfaces and integrations: what happens when connected systems respond late, incorrectly, or not at all?
• Data integrity: is information processed consistently and accurately across the entire workflow?
• Timing and performance: does the system remain reliable under real operational conditions?
• Failure scenarios: how does it behave when components, communications, or dependencies fail?
• Regression risk: can a small change somewhere create a critical problem somewhere else?
❗️ In business-critical and safety-critical environments, “it passed the test” is not enough.
You need repeatable evidence that the system behaves correctly across normal, boundary, and failure conditions—and that the same confidence can be reproduced after every change.
That is where test automation becomes more than an efficiency tool. It becomes part of the system’s risk-control strategy.
The objective is not to automate as many tests as possible.
It is to automate the right tests, at the right level, with the right evidence.
