SpaceX’s latest launch has raised the potential for all kinds of new space-based infrastructure, including data centers. It is noted that the commercialization of space is nothing new, however the idea of a network of data centers orbiting the earth “still seemed more science fiction than fact until very recently”.

In this article, the author states that “while SpaceX and others may have answered the question of how to put data centers in orbit, the “why” is a bit more challenging”, adding that a number of startups are focusing specifically on space-based connectivity and data storage. Laser Light Communications (who recently collaborated with Equinix) for example, have developed some potential business models and intend to launch a “constellation of laser-enabled satellites”.

Cloud provider, DDoS-Guard, has successfully put in operation a new scrubbing center in Hong Kong which is intended to offer fast and reliable services for customers in the Asia Pacific region. Equinix’s HK1 data center is the base at which the mitigation equipment is installed, complete with “advanced and reliable systems for monitoring temperature, energy conservation and lighting”.

Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is currently dominating fintech conversation, with notable examples including blockchain as a result of its origins of supporting the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The article reports that, despite its promise to “replace tedious paper work in the heavy-documentation banking sector”, technology providers and analysts said DLT will remain in the experimental stage in 2018. Alex Tam, managing director Equinix Hong Kong, notes that the technology behind DLT remains “immature” and highlights a lack of certainty in its operations: “while there are quite a number of proven test cases, what remains to be proven is a solution that is commercially viable”.
