I had almost forgotten about this design which I came up with the very early days of Converter Technology, back in 2008. I had been thinking about ways to simplify mains LED driving and it occurred to me that there were a couple of mechanisms which could be employed:-

LEDs tend to act as a constant voltage load, and,
A flyback converter running in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) will tend to act like a constant power source if the peak switches currently every cycle is set to a fixed level (i.e. peak current mode control with fixed peak current)
A PSU running with constant power into a ~fixed voltage load will tend to lead to a fixed current which is what we want for LED driving. The good thing here is that using this approach we don't need to sense the secondary side current (lossy) and send back via an optocoupler (expensive) since we just make sure we design it to run in DCM over the full range of mains voltage and LED string voltage we expect.

We decided to do the analysis and then build a prototype. The resulting design did work really well and whilst the regulation will never be as good as a full closed loop control system, it is simple and for low-cost applications may be interesting.
