🚀 [From Lab to Market] DeepTech100+ Cohort 7 Lean Launcher Bootcamp Kicks Off!

How do advanced lab breakthroughs turn into real-world impact? The answer is simple: “Get out of the building!” 💡

🔥 In Aug, close to 30 innovative teams from DeepTech100+ Cohort 7 gathered for an intensive Lean Launcher Bootcamp, laying a strong foundation for their market validation journeys. The day was divided into two dynamic sessions. In the morning, participants engaged in hands-on training centered around the Lean Launcher framework, enabling them to shift their mindsets from a technology-first approach to a market-first perspective. This session also provided ample opportunities for idea exchange and networking among fellow innovators. In the afternoon, industry mentors took the stage to share their invaluable domain expertise, guiding the teams through strategic roadmaps and effective commercialization strategies. The bootcamp successfully energized the teams and equipped them with practical insights to accelerate their startup development.

🎯 The Next 2 Months, teams will undergo 5 rigorous report-back sessions. Guided by their dedicated mentors, they will hit the ground running with direct customer interviews, deep-dive market validation, and real-world testing—mastering essential business analytics tools along the way 📈✨

A huge THANK YOU to all track leaders and mentors for their unwavering support and guidance! 🙏❤️

We can't wait to support these 29 teams as they bridge the gap between academic innovation and scalable deep-tech ventures. 🏃‍♂️💨

💰 HKU Startup Legal Day X ZhongLun: From Campus Startup to First Financing

On August 19, 2026, HKU Startup Legal Day was held in collaboration with ZhongLun, bringing together HKU entrepreneurs to tackle the legal challenges of early-stage startups. This hybrid event provided invaluable insights into legal structures, equity allocation, and funding essentials crucial for transforming a campus startup into a sustainable business. 🤝

The session is designed for startup teams founded by faculty, students, and alumni of the University of Hong Kong. It will focus on the most common legal issues encountered at the early stages of a business—issues that can significantly affect future fundraising and growth, including choosing an appropriate onshore and offshore corporate structure; founder equity allocation and employee equity incentive plans; ownership and protection of intellectual property; and key Term Sheet provisions and practical considerations when communicating with investors. 📈

💡 We were privileged to have Jack Qiao, Partner, ZhongLun, and Mika Wang, Senior Associate, ZhongLun, deliver a deep dive into legal strategies that lay the groundwork for future fundraising and growth. The event also featured an exclusive opportunity for in-person participants to engage in 1-on-1 legal consultations, helping startups tailor their legal foundations for success.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to ZhongLun, our HKU Innovation & Entrepreneurship ecosystem partner, and all participants for your enthusiasm and active engagement! Solid legal foundations are essential to scale your startup confidently and attract funding.

Connecting Global Leaders 🌍Building the Future of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)

On August 15, we convened the world's leading minds in Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, transforming Shenzhen into a global meeting point for this rapidly developing field.

Hosted at our HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy (TEA) in Qianhai, the BCI Conference brought together a curated group of over 250 researchers, clinicians, industry leaders, and innovators. The mission: to collectively navigate the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of BCI.

The dialogue was truly global, spotlighting distinguished perspectives from Dr. Behzad Mansouri from Canada and Dr. Yan Tat Wong from Australia, alongside experts from Hong Kong and Mainland China. Discussions spanned the entire ecosystem—from foundational research and clinical application to investment and regulatory pathways.

A powerful consensus emerged from our highlight roundtable, “Bridging Continents.” The message was clear: advancing BCI demands radical collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and borders. To translate scientific breakthroughs into meaningful real-world impact, we must forge connections between research, clinical expertise, investment, and industry. 🤝

This is our mission at HKU TEC in action: creating the platforms where world-class research ignites entrepreneurship and global collaboration. As BCI evolves, we see Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area as the critical nexus for connecting international innovation with clinical and commercial opportunities. 🚀

This conference was more than a discussion; it was a decisive step in building the global ecosystem needed to make the future of BCI a reality.

A special thank you to our co-hosts: Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre (ABIC), HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy (TEA), and the HKU Shenzhen Institute of Research and Innovation.

🚀 Unlocking the Human Element of Venture Capital at Angel Investing 101!

The fifth session of our Angel Investing 101 Workshop Series concluded with resounding success on Thursday, 23rd July! 🌟

Titled “Beyond Due Diligence: The Hidden Triggers That Make Angels Commit,” the event brought together over 100 passionate participants, including aspiring angel investors, ecosystem builders, and entrepreneurs. 🔥

While standard early-stage evaluations rely on checklists and financial models, this session explored the psychological drivers behind an investor's final "Yes." 📈

💡 Key Takeaways from the Keynote

We were incredibly honored to feature Mr. Leo Chiu, Chief Technology Partner at Click Ventures. Drawing from his expansive background as a Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur and a seasoned venture professional with major startup exits, Leo delivered a masterclass on navigating the human element of venture capital:

🎯 Founders > Ideas: Angels don't just back a conceptual product; they place their highest bets on the resilience, adaptability, and vision of the leadership team.
✨ The "Yes" Inevitability: Top founders move beyond cold data to build high-stakes trust and immediate credibility during their very first interactions.
🛡️ De-Risking the Human Factor: Successful investment strategies require a practical framework to assess founder chemistry alongside standard financial due diligence.

🤝 Engagement & Dynamic Networking

Following a highly interactive and sharp Q&A session, the event transitioned into an energetic networking hour. Attendees connected over light snacks and refreshments, sparking vibrant conversations across the room.

A massive thank you goes out to our brilliant speaker, Mr. Leo Chiu, for sharing his deep expertise, and to the 100+ attendees whose incredible energy made this session immensely fruitful! 🎓
