Hi,
To continue on the previous post….
In a speaker driver, the magnetic operating point of the different elements (magnet, pole pieces, air) are determined by the permanent magnet only when you do not use the speaker. This operating point defines the magnetic field strength H and the magnetic induction B in the different area of the driver.
Nevertheless, when a current goes into the coil of the driver, this coil creates also its own magnetic field. The global resulting magnetic field therefore will be the sum of the magnetic field coming from the permanent magnet and the one coming from the coil.
The first thing to know is that: higher the current going throw the coil will be, bigger will be the part of the global magnetic field generated by the coil. For some drivers used in professional speaker where the current can reach 10A, the part of the magnetic field coming from the coil can reach 30% of the total magnetic field. This is obviously a source of non-linearity of the force applied on the membrane of the driver and a source of distortion. Even without talking of problem of heat dissipation, this is one of the reason why we should always try to choose a speaker with the highest possible efficiency. The Hadron for example have an efficiency of more than 100 db and will be able to play super loud with less than 1 watt…
This is also a good new on the amplification side because for an equal quality, a 15 watts amplifier will cost you much more than just a one watt amp. If it does not, do not dream, it just means that some compromises has been done on your 15 watts amp. Thomas have the 46 amp which produce 1,25 watt. It is more than enough for the Hadron and also for speakers like the Avant Garde (wonderful combination with Thomas Mayer 46 amp between us). The mono block 46 in its ultimate copper version costs 245 000 HKD. The equivalent with a 211 instead of the 46 reach 423 000 HKD…
The second thing to know is that the magnetic field created by the moving coil also modifies the operating point of the permanent magnet. What does it mean? It means that the magnetic induction of the permanent magnet that is supposed to be constant is actually modulated by the current going through the coil. In other terms, the music that you are playing modulates an electric signal but also the magnetic field of the permanent magnets attached to the drivers of your beloved loudspeakers!!! This phenomenon is also one cause of distortion. It does not exist when this permanent magnet is replaced by a field coil and it is certainly the main reason of the superiority of the field coil technology.
We will organize some listening sessions with the Hadron and I invite you to come and listen to them without pre-conceived ideas. The field coil thing is only a tiny part of what makes them so special so be curious and
ready to be surprised !!!!
