What Your BOM Inquiry Is Actually Missing — 5 Details That Get You Better Quotes

You sent a 200-line BOM to a distributor. 48 hours later you got back a PDF with prices — and a “lead time: TBD” on half the lines. Sound familiar?

The problem usually isn’t the distributor. It’s what was missing from the inquiry.

After handling thousands of component requests for European buyers, here are the 5 details that almost always turn a generic reply into a real, usable quote:

1️⃣ Target quantities per line
“Need 100” vs. “Need 5,000” changes pricing tiers and stock-sourcing paths. Vague quantities get vague prices.

2️⃣ Substitutes — yes or no, upfront
Say it early: “OK with cross-reference if drop-in” or “must be exact match.” Saves a week of back-and-forth.

3️⃣ A real deadline, not “ASAP”
Distributors plan around dates. A target week (even a flexible one) lets them actually reserve stock for you.

4️⃣ End application / environment
Industrial? Automotive? Medical? It tells us whether to flag wide-temp parts, AEC-Q100 grades, or RoHS/REACH docs upfront — before they bite you later.

5️⃣ Single shipment vs. phased
“Need all at once” or “OK to split into 2 deliveries” changes logistics and pricing completely. Don’t make us guess.
