Lets discuss APIs. What are they, and why is it so important to secure them?

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are the building blocks of modern applications, and can be classified as ramps into the digital world. APIs keep everyone connected to vital data and services, enable all sorts of critical business operations, and make digital transformation possible.

Businesses use APIs to connect services and transfer data. A compromised, exposed, or hacked API can expose personal data, financial information, or other sensitive data. Therefore, security is a critical consideration when designing and developing APIs.

APIs are vulnerable to security weaknesses in backend systems. If attackers compromise the API provider, they can potentially compromise all API data and functionality. APIs can also be exploited via malicious requests, if the API is not properly coded and protected.

For example, a denial of service (DDoS) attack can take an API endpoint online or significantly degrade performance. Attackers can abuse APIs by scraping data or exceeding usage limits. More sophisticated attackers can inject malicious code to perform unauthorized operations or compromise the backend.

With the popularity of microservices and serverless architectures, almost every enterprise application depends on APIs for its basic functionality. This makes API security a core part of modern information security.

Check out our OwlGaze expert's 5 best practices to secure your APIs below.

As far as security concepts go, "Trust But Verify" was the common practice in many organisation's cybersecurity architecture for long periods of time. Trusted users and endpoints are automatically allowed network access, but this always puts organisations at risk of a wide array of security threats.

In today's day and age, however, "Trust But Verify" has become obsolete.

The emergence of cloud-based services and SaaS applications, as well as a growing number of remote, distributed global workforces means that businesses need to adopt a more stringent approach to better protect themselves.

This is why the concept of Zero Trust will be one of the most talked about areas of cybersecurity in 2023.

Zero Trust, or "Never Trust, Always Verify", is a security framework requiring all users - whether inside or outside the organisation's network - to be authenticated, authorized and continously validated for security configuration and posture before being granted or maintaning access to applications and data.

Many businesses already have all the hardware and software solutions they need to implement a Zero Trust environment, but there is still the need to design and architect the proper configuration to achieve this.

OwlGaze helps re-assess and build cyber journeys towards more secure businesses. Starting by safeguarding any sensitive data, applications and critical infrastructure, we can identify and measure cyber threats then demonstrate how to manage these potential risks as businesses continue to advance.

Small businesses are just as at risk from cybersecurity threats as large enterprises. A common misconception for small businesses is an idea of security through obscurity, that their business is too small to be a target.

Unfortunately, this is not the case.

As attackers increasingly automate attacks, it is easy for them to target hundreds, if not thousands of small businesses at once. Small businesses often have less stringent technological defenses, less awareness of threats and less time and resource to put into cybersecurity.

But, at the same time, they are no less lucrative targets. Even the smallest businesses can deal with large sums of money, or have access to huge amounts of data, which, under regulations such as GDPR, they are obliged to protect. Small businesses also often work with larger companies, and so they can be used by hackers as a way to target those companies.

Small businesses also arguably have the most to lose from being hit with a damaging cyberattack. A recent report revealed that businesses with less than 500 employees lose on average USD 2.5 million per attack. Losing this amount of money in a cyber breach is devastating to small businesses, not to mention the reputational damage that comes from being hit by a cyberattack.

The most common technology used by organizations to combat malware is the Signature-based methodology.

What exactly is this, and how does it work?

In computing, all objects have attributes that can be used to create a unique signature. Algorithms quickly and efficiently scan an object to determine its digital signature.

When an anti-malware solution provider identifies an object as malicious, its signature is added to a database of known malware. These repositories may contain hundreds of millions of signatures that identify malicious objects.

The more recent solution against malware is Behavior Analysis, which evaluates an object based on its intended actions before it can actually execute that behavior.

An object's behavior, or in some cases its potential behavior, is analyzed for suspicious activities. Behaviors of this kind may include any attempts to discover a sandbox environment, disabling security controls, installing rootkits, and registering for autostart.

What are some instances where behavior-based technology succeeds where signature-based systems fail?

Check them out below.

Did You Know?

Cybercrime will cost companies worldwide an estimated $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015. At a growth rate of 15 percent year over year — Cybersecurity Ventures also reports that cybercrime represents the greatest transfer of economic wealth in history.

These costs, however, are not always just one-off losses.

The long tail costs of a data breach can extend for months to years and include significant expenses that companies are not aware of or do not anticipate in their planning.

These costs include lost data, business disruption, revenue losses from system downtime, notification costs, or even damage to a brand’s reputation.

Blacklight, OwlGaze’s new AI-powered threat detection software, helps to significantly decrease risk and minimise cost, by helping organizations to act before cyber threats proceed to damage their technological integrity.

Don't be held to ransom.

Despite increased investment in tools to fight ransomware, 90% of organizations were affected by ransomware in some capacity over the past 12 months, according to SpyCloud's 2022 Ransomware Defense Report.

The graphic below depicts the various ways in which ransomware attacks can impact organizations, and just how severe the repercussions can be.

There are, however, steps that enterprises can take to protect themselves from attacks of this magnitude. Network Segmentation, Endpoint Security, and Regular Security Awareness Training are some of the angles OwlGaze takes when protecting organizations from malicious threat actors.

Let's dive into Regulatory Compliance.

It is imperative for organizations to be aware of, and aligned with, all the laws and regulations relevant to their business and industry. These regulations may be set at the local, state, federal, or international levels. Regulatory compliance is essential since it can drive an organization's strategic direction, ensure accountability and transparency.

Maintaining compliance helps companies mitigate risks like security breaches and data losses, as well as avoid disciplinary action that could lead to license revocations, damaged reputations, lost customers and financial penalties and losses.

Blacklight ensures that you never miss a beat, with our provision of comprehensive reporting on the performance of compliance controls ensuring that organizations are consistently meeting industry and government regulations.

So what are some of the more specific benefits on maintaining regulatory compliance? Check out the graphic below.

Access Governance Matters.

As increasingly more companies rely on third-party vendors for operational support, on-site premises are being replaced by the cloud.

According to a 2022 Ponemon Institute report, 48% of organizations don't have a comprehensive inventory of all third parties with access to their network. 49% of these organizations experienced third-party attacks in 2022. 70% of the organizations that experienced third-party attacks did so because they gave too much-privileged access to their third parties.

These figures are a perfect example of why access governance matters. At OwlGaze, we ensure that your company's access policy is followed as closely as possible. We help establish rules of which users can access what and the specific privileges those users have.
