It’s Time to Learn from Josip – Your Host on Electric Arc Modeling!⚡

This Friday, February 21, at 14:00 CET, Simtec’s Senior Application Engineer, Josip Zlatic, will host Episode 3 of Simulation Fridays S3: Electric Arc Modeling – Coupled EM-Thermal Simulation.
Ahead of the session, we asked Josip a few key questions about the challenges and importance of simulating electric arcs. Here’s what he shared with us:

🔍 Why is coupling electromagnetic and thermal simulations so important?
"Electric arcs involve complex interactions between multiple physical phenomena, making accurate modeling essential. The challenge? Experimental validation is often impossible, with temperatures exceeding 20,000°C. This is why understanding these processes before building the first prototype is crucial."

🔍 How does Ansys Maxwell and Ansys Fluent integration enhance arc modeling?
"By using System Coupling, we create a seamless workflow that minimizes setup errors and accurately captures interactions between flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetic fields. Advanced material descriptions help model complex arc properties, plasma-electrode interactions, and PTFE ablation."

🔍 What are some real-world applications of electric arc simulation?
"Electric arc modeling is vital for circuit breakers, high-voltage switchgear, and electrical safety devices. It helps engineers enhance product reliability, optimize performance, and reduce the costs and time spent on physical testing."
