How protect computer from Virus?

There are numerous ways to protect and remove malware from our computers. No one method is enough to ensure your computer is secure. The more layers of defense, the harder for hackers to use your computer. Here are eight simple, but critical steps to protect your computer -

1. Use a Firewall - A firewall enacts the role of a security guard. There are of two types of firewalls: a software firewall and hardware firewall. Each serves similar, but different purposes. A firewall is the first step to provide security to the computer. It creates a barrier between the computer and any unauthorized program trying to come in through the Internet. Always keep on your system firewall. It makes you aware if there are any unauthorized efforts to use your system.

2. Keep your software up to date - Software makers like Microsoft, Oracle and Adobe routinely update their software to fix bugs that could potentially be exploited by hackers. These updates are help to fix security holes, that help hackers to infect computers with malware.

3. Don’t click on links within emails - A good habit to avoid email links, if you don’t recognize a sender of an email, don’t click on any links within it. Microsoft says 44.8 percent of Windows virus infections happen because the computer user clicked on something.

4. Use an antivirus - Antivirus is one other means to protect the computer. It is software that helps to protect the computer from any unauthorized code or software that creates a threat to the system. Unauthorized software includes viruses, keyloggers, trojans etc.

5. Use a pop-up blocker - Web browsers have the ability to stop pop-up windows and allow you to set the security for accepting pop-ups. The federal OnGuardOnline site recommends never clicking on links within pop-up screens.

6. Use Complex and Secure Passwords - The first line of defence in maintaining system security is to have strong and complex passwords. Complex passwords are difficult for the hackers to find. Use a password that is at least 8 characters in length a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. While some people use the same password for everything, try to avoid that practice. Hackers use certain tools to break easy passwords in few minutes. One recent study showed that a 6 character password with all lower case letters can be broken in under 6 minutes!

7. Use Linux - The Linux operating system is the most secure system software. Almost all viruses are inactive in Linux system, but still, it's not fully protected from malware. As an open source operating system, Linux destroys are always updating your system with the latest security patches within a day after any vulnerability detected.

8. Back up your computer - Do you regularly back up the information on your computer? If you don't then 29 percent of computer users fall into that category you have no protection from your data from hard drive failure from virus attack or any other reason. If you value your data, back it up.

What is an Encrypted virus?
An encrypted virus is a computer virus that encrypts its payload with the intention of making detecting the virus more difficult. However, because anything encrypted needs a decryptor or a key an antivirus can use the decryptor as the method of detection.

Note: An encrypted virus should not be confused with the more recent computer viruses like cryptolocker that encrypt the data on your hard drive and hold it for ransom.1

HOW DOES A COMPUTER GET INFECTED WITH A VIRUS OR SPYWARE?

There are dozens of ways a computer can become infected with spyware, viruses, and other malware. Below is a list of methods of how your computer can become infected. We've made this list in the order we believe to be most to least common.

***Accepting without reading***

By far one of the most common ways a computer becomes infected is when a user accepts what they see on the screen without reading the prompt before proceeding. For instance:

1. While browsing the Internet, an Internet advertisement or window appears that says your computer is infected or that a unique plug-in is required. Without fully understanding what it is you're getting, you accept the prompt.
2. When installing or updating a program, you're prompted (often check boxes already checked) if it's okay to install additional programs that you may not want or are designed to monitor your usage of the program.

Tip: When installing a program you are given the options between an automatic and custom install. If you are installing something from the Internet we suggest doing a custom install to make sure nothing else is added or changed during the install.

***Downloading any infected software***

When downloading any software (programs, utilities, games, updates, demos, etc.) via the Internet, make sure you're downloading the software from a reliable source. Be sure to run your downloads through your antivirus and spyware scanners upon completion. As we stated in a previous section, during the installation process, read all prompts about what the program is installing on your computer.

Tip: You can help verify if a website is reliable by using tools such as WOT. [http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/w/wot.htm]

***Opening e-mail attachments***

As a general rule, do not open e-mail you were not expecting to receive. Computers can become infected when users open e-mail attachments that contain malicious code. Even if the message is from a co-worker, friend, or family member, always use caution before opening a link or downloading an attachment.

***Inserting or connecting an infected disk, disc, or drive***

Any disk, disc, or thumb drive connected or inserted into your computer can be infected with a virus. As long as something is writable, a virus can move from a computer to that disk, disc, or drive. A common tactic used by hackers to gain access to a network is by leaving out a thumb drive with malicious code on it. Then, when a user puts the thumb drive into their computer, it becomes infected with a virus or trojan horse.

Note: This same rule applies to any networked drive or computer. If another computer has write access to your computer or a drive accessible by your computer, a virus can move between computers on a network.

***Not running the latest updates***

Many of the updates, especially those associated with Microsoft Windows, are security oriented. Always keep your operating system and programs up to date. The plug-ins associated with your browser can also contain security vulnerabilities. To make sure you have the latest versions, run the Computer Hope tool to check installed plug-ins and their versions.

***Pirating software, music, or movies***

If you or someone on your computer is participating in a bit torrent program or some other unlawful exchange of copyrighted music, movies, or software, you may be at risk. Sometimes these files and programs contain viruses, spyware or malicious software in addition to what you believe you are downloading.

***No antivirus spyware scanner***

If you're running a computer with Microsoft Windows, we highly recommended you have some form of antivirus and spyware or malware protection. This software can remove any existing viruses and spyware, and it helps prevent against future infections.

Top 10 keyboard shortcuts everyone should know

Using keyboard shortcuts can greatly increase your productivity, reduce repetitive strain, and help keep you focused. For example, to copy text, you can highlight text and press the Ctrl + C shortcut. The shortcut is faster than moving your hands from the keyboard, highlighting with the mouse, choosing copy from the file menu, and then returning to the keyboard.

Below are the top 10 keyboard shortcuts we recommend everyone memorize and use.

1. Ctrl + C or Ctrl + Insert and Ctrl + X

Both Ctrl + C and Ctrl + Insert will copy the highlighted text or selected item. If you want to cut instead of copy press Ctrl + X.

Apple computer users can substitute the Ctrl key for the command (cmd) key on their computers. For example, pressing Cmd + C copies the highlighted text.
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert

2. Both the Ctrl + V and Shift + Insert will paste the text or object that's in the clipboard.

For Apple computer users use Cmd + V.

Use the above text input fields to highlight the "Cut or copy this text" text and press either Ctrl + C to copy or Ctrl + X to Cut the text. Once Cut Move to the next field and press Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert to paste the text.

3. Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Y

Pressing Ctrl + Z will Undo any change. For example, if you cut text, pressing this will undo it. These shortcuts can also be pressed multiple times to undo or redo multiple changes. Pressing Ctrl + Y would redo the undo.

For Apple computers use Cmd + Z and Cmd + Y to undo and redo.
Use the above text input field to highlight some or all of the text and then press Ctrl + X to cut the text. Once the text has disappeared press the Ctrl + Z to undo the cut.

*Tip: If you did the first example as well (cut and paste text) if you continue to press Ctrl + Z it is also going to undo that change.

4. Ctrl + F

Pressing Ctrl + F opens the Find in any program. Ctrl + F includes your Internet browser to find text on the current page. Press Ctrl + F now to open the Find in your browser and search for "shortcut" to find each time shortcut is mentioned on this page.

For Apple computer use Cmd + F to find.

5. Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Tab

Pressing Alt + Tab switches between open programs moving forward. For example, if you have your browser window open and other programs running in the background press and hold Alt and then press tab to cycle through each open program.

On Apple computers instead of using the Alt key use the Command (Cmd) key. For Example, Cmd + Tab to switch between open programs.

*Bonus Tip: Press Ctrl + Tab to switch between tabs in a program. For example, if you have multiple tabs open in your browser now press Ctrl + Tab to switch between open tabs.

*Bonus Tip: Adding the Shift key to Alt + Tab or Ctrl + Tab moves backward. For example, if you are pressing Alt + Tab and pass the program you want to use, press Alt + Shift + Tab to move back to that program.

*Bonus Tip: Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 users can also press the Windows Key + Tab to switch through open programs in a full screenshot of the window.

6. Ctrl + Back space and Ctrl + Left or Right arrow

Note: This is for PC computer users only and does not work on Apple computers

Pressing Ctrl + Backspace will delete a full word at a time instead of a single character.

Holding down the Ctrl key while pressing the left or right arrow will move the cursor one word at a time instead of one character at a time. If you want to highlight one word at a time, hold down Ctrl + Shift and then press the left or right arrow key to move one word at a time in that direction while highlighting each word.

7. Ctrl + S

While working on a document or other file in almost every program, pressing Ctrl + S saves that file. Use this shortcut key frequently if you're working on anything important in case an error happens, you lose power, or other problem that causes you to lose any work since the last save.

On Apple computers use Cmd + S to save a file.

8. Ctrl + Home or Ctrl + End

Ctrl + Home will move the cursor to the beginning of the document, and Ctrl + End will move the cursor to the end of a document. These shortcuts work with most documents, as well as web pages.

On Apple computers use Command and the Cmd and the up arrow to get to the beginning of a document or text or Cmd and the down arrow to get to the end of a document or text.

9. Ctrl + P

Open a print preview of the current page or document being viewed. For example, press Ctrl + P now to view a print preview of this page.

On Apple computers use Cmd + P to open the print preview.

10. Page Up, Spacebar, and Page Down

Pressing either the page up or page down key will move that page one page at a time in that direction. When browsing the Internet, pressing the spacebar also moves the page down one page at a time.

Tip: If you are using the spacebar to go down one page at a time, press the Shift key and spacebar to go up one page at a time.
