WHY LEARN ELECTRONIC DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM DESIGN(CAPI)
Electronic data collection system or Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) system has become a standard requirement in the data industry and the world of research. From the field of academia to Monitoring & Evaluation, data quality is important. In fact, we can only start analysing data with quality data and quality survey data can only be achieved through electronic data collection system. Here are some advantages of electronic data collection in comparison to paper-based collection.
Quality Control
Electronic data collection(EDC) allows you to design forms with pre-fillable answers, logical checks and skip patterns which prevents errors at the point of data collection and reduces data collection time on the field.
Data Entry
Unlike paper questionnaires, EDC responses are digitised and the moment they are submitted to the server, the server aggregates all relevant observations and make it ready for download. With regards to paper questionnaires, you have to spend several hours entering data after field data collection.
Multiple Data Formats
EDC allows you to design forms that collects data with all questions types in multiple data formats at one place. EDC allows you to collect data in texts, numeric, photos, audio, video and gps formats and store everything at one location. With regards to paper questionnaires, you need audio, camera and GPS devices to be able to achieve that.
Financial
Unlike EDC, collecting data with paper questionnaires comes with an extra cost for paying data entry officers after field data collection. Purchasing devices for photos, audio, videos and GPS data also comes with an extra cost. EDC only requires you to purchase or hire tablets for data collection. In some cases, enumerators recruited for data collection are required to use their personal mobile phones or tablets, which goes further to reduce cost surveys.
