Not long ago, a drone was something these students only saw in movies, or on the news, flown by someone else, somewhere else, for reasons that had nothing to do with them.
Last month, at the park, one of our students holds the controller himself. Eyes on the sky. Thumbs steady on the joystick, and above her, the drone lifts, turns, and moves exactly where she guides it.
We split the screen so you can see both sides of this moment. On one side, the pilot, a student from an underserved community, now flying real equipment with her own hands. On the other side, the shot, the exact view from the drone's camera, a perspective few children like her ever get the chance to see, let alone create.
This is what access looks like. Not a promise. Not a policy. A student piloting a drone in a public park, doing something she was never supposed to have the chance to do.
