This year’s theme is “Secure Our World.” The takeaways from this month include “Four Easy Ways to Stay Safe Online” for businesses and organizations to employ and educate their users for use at home:
1. Use strong passwords and a password manager.
2. Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA).
3. Recognize and report phishing. Think before you click or act.
4. Update software.
These basic safeguards are part, but just part, of effective security.

It’s a good time to explore developments in these safeguards and to incorporate the changes into cybersecurity programs. For example, using passkeys to replace passwords is becoming more common following adoption by major technology companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Federal agencies are increasingly warning about using SIM swapping (cloning a victim’s cell phone) to defeat SMS (text message) MFA and encouraging the use of authenticator apps instead of SMS. Phishing is becoming increasingly sophisticated, including using artificial intelligence by attackers, increasing the need for technical defenses and regular user training. There seem to be almost daily reports of new zero-day vulnerabilities (for which security updates are not yet available), which makes it increasingly important to regularly check for and promptly apply updates when they become available, and replace devices and software that no longer receive updates.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a time to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. It is important for all users to be attentive to security every time they are using technology, all year long.

How to Easily Share AirTags With iOS 17:

When Apple released iOS 17 on Sept. 18, it introduced a lot of new features and improvements to your iPhone, like Live Stickers and offline maps. One of the more helpful new features Apple introduced in iOS 17 is the ability to share AirTags with up to five people. That means you can share AirTags for communal items, like luggage, so more people can track and help you find items if they are lost.

Apple released AirTags in 2021 as a way to help people keep track of their valuable items, like your keys when your couch eats them. However, AirTags could be attached to only one user at a time. Until now, you couldn't lend someone an AirTag to borrow, and if you traveled with someone who had an AirTag, you would be notified that you're traveling with an unidentified AirTag. But that changed with iOS 17.

Here's how to share AirTags so more people can easily find your valuable items.

How to share AirTags

1. Open the Find My app.
2. Tap Items across the bottom of your screen.
3. Tap the AirTag you want to share with others.
4. Tap Add Person under Share This AirTag.

Your iPhone will show you a prompt that says once you've shared an AirTag, the people you've shared it with will be able to locate it and those same people will also not receive unidentified tracking notifications. Tap Continue and then you'll be able to choose who to share the AirTag with.

Once you've shared the AirTag, the other person will receive a notification to add it. All they need to do is tap the notification's Add button, which adds the tag to their Find My app.

If you're going through this process and receive a notification for a shared AirTag you don't recognize, there's an option to tap Don't Add.

How to stop sharing AirTags

If you lent your AirTag to a family member or friend to use and they return it, you can stop sharing your AirTag with them. Here's how.

1. Open the Find My app.
2. Tap Items across the bottom of your screen.
3. Tap the AirTag you want to stop sharing.
4. Tap the name of the person you want to stop sharing the AirTag with.
5. Tap Remove.

Your iPhone will show another prompt saying that the person won't be able to locate your item and they will instead receive unidentified tracking notifications. Tap Stop Sharing and you're set.

This initiative, geared towards nurturing local talent, sharing knowledge, raising awareness, and inspiring enthusiasm for the ICT sector, is slated to kick off from September 4 to September 11, 2023, with a mentorship program and closing ceremony set for September 15, 2023.

Project goals

Beyond technical education, the program will feature a Career Guidance Session, an Entrepreneurship Tech Talk, and a Tech4Good global competition designed to encourage innovative tech solutions addressing societal issues.

Notably, the Tech4Good competition will present substantial financial backing, with a $100,000 startup fund awarded to the top-performing teams. These successful teams will also earn the opportunity to partake in a Startup Sprint event in China, affording them real-world business experience.

Distinguished speakers

During the launch of the Seeds for the Future Program, distinguished speakers took the virtual stage. Mrs. Ama Pomaa Boateng, the Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalization, commended the initiative, stressing the importance of nurturing digital talent to adapt to the evolving job market.

Turning dreams into reality: Fido's E-Loans for Momo Agents.
Fido, Africa's leading online financial services company, is stepping up to help Mobile Money Agents Ghana.
Introducing GH₵5000 e-loans, Fido aims to solve the eCash flow struggles these merchants often face.

Licensed by the Bank of Ghana and certified by the Data Protection Commission of Ghana, Fido has already given out three million loans to more than half a million customers.

Named "Dream Big: One Loan at a Time," this new service is designed to give MoMo agents a helping hand in managing their daily eCash struggle.
Instead of constantly juggling their eCash reserves, they can now focus on what matters most - their customers and growing their business.

The Head of Business Development at Fido, Solomon Agbemenya, said: “With Ghana becoming one of the fastest-growing mobile money markets in Africa, we at FIDO recognize the vital role mobile money agents play and the difficulties they’ve had in obtaining financial support from financial institutions. As a company, we see the need to cushion them up with a loan that is convenient and easily accessible to keep them in business”.

With a loan from Fido, MoMo agents can get eCash directly in their wallets once approved, in about 30 minutes. Everything's clear upfront – the costs are explained during application and when the money is sent. Fido's Momo Loan Application lets agents sign up and request up to GHS 1,500 the first time, and up to GHS 5000 later on.

Glorious’ Model I is an affordable gaming mouse with four thumb buttons

Glorious PC Gaming Race has announced the Model I, a lightweight wired mouse that’s both comfortable and capable

It costs $59.99, and it’s available in matte black or white. This new mouse is made for medium-to-large hands, and unlike the fan-favorite Model O and D, the Model I feels a little more ergonomic in my palm, with a thumb rest that widens the footprint of its bottom.

Its design fills my hand in a similar way to Razer’s Basilisk mouse, and its size doesn’t get in my way of reaching its buttons. It feels wonderful to use.

Tech firms face higher levies as Kenya plans to double digital service tax

Kenya plans to double the digital service tax (DST) to 3% beginning July this year, as the government taps the growing online economy to increase its domestic revenues and narrow fiscal deficit.

It is expected that the new rates, proposed in the Finance Bill by the country’s Treasury department, will be passed by the lawmakers. The increase comes slightly over a year after the DST came into effect in Kenya, affecting tech companies such as Amazon, Uber, Spotify and Netflix.

Elon Musk snags Twitter board seat after buying large stake in the US social network

Twitter announced this morning via a tweet and a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Elon Musk, best known for his work at PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla, is joining the social network’s board of directors.

News broke earlier in the week that Musk had purchased a more than 9% stake in the social media company after criticizing its speech policies publicly in late March. The news that the technology entrepreneur had purchased several billion dollars worth of Twitter stock sent shares of the company sharply higher yesterday.

Twitter is again appreciating this morning, rising more than 5% in pre-market trading.

Elon gives $2.9B gift to Twitter, its employees, and himself. What’s next?

It must be slightly intoxicating to be able to move markets. Imagine if your latest purchase of a stock or token sent the value of that security soaring simply because it became known that you made the trade.

Such is the case with Elon Musk and Twitter. As TechCrunch reported this morning, the well-known technology entrepreneur “has taken a 9.2% share of the company, working out to around $2.9 billion based on Friday’s share price.” In response to Musk’s disclosure that he had purchased so much of the U.S. social network, shares of Twitter are up 24.6% as I write to you this morning.
