My heartfelt interest is in the children in the communtiy of Ekumfi Asokwa. It is a very rural community located in the Central Region of Ghana. The community as well as the district is the most under developed of the country. Ekumfi Asokwa is in dire poverty - much of it having to do with the economic and political processes. In recent years, Ghana's economic status has declined and in the most rural areas this is multiplied ten fold. Having come there and making relationship with the people and the children, I have come to know them as resilient, hard working and striving hard to raise their children and to maintain their human dignity. The school children are in need of updated infrastructure, sanitary improvements, better teaching materials, means to access clean water. They also need experiences outside of their community. Many of them never venture out and feel relegated to life of subsistence and extremely hard labor. Within the school system of Ghana there is a "Capitation Grant" which is to pay for school supplies, maintain the school buildings and for educational field trips. Also there is a "school feeding program" by the government, for which Ekumfi Asokwa schools qualify. This school feeding program allows the children to have a breakfast before school. Over the last 5 years, these programs have failed to materialize for Ekumfi Asokwa school pupils. Funds raised will reverse this pattern of continued marginalization of the most vulnerable and allow the children to be well-educated, have positive experiences via field trips and, most importantly, to have a bright future and to see themselves as significant persons. Help spread the word!
