Not many people imagined the possibilities with social media when we were creating our Hi5 pages for the first time. Not many people imagined that our businesses could be made and unmade by simple 140 character posts or that we could raise millions of dollars for political campaigns on what we termed social networking sites. Today, every serious entity in the world seeks to maintain a healthy and meaningful presence online as a way to stay relevant, stay visible, increase productivity and so much more. Social networking has transitioned from being just that, to becoming an intricate web of digital tools, websites and mobile apps. Today, it is more than just social networking, it is a whole social media, it goes beyond connecting people, it is about engaging people.
Social media is a proven tool for business growth and productivity. A lot of people have still not come to the realization that it is not enough to just ask your cousin who has 2000 followers on Twitter to manage your social media or that just because someone seems techy does not mean they can draw up a social or digital media strategy and execute it. This is serious business that requires real skills and even expert knowledge.
Much like every project you wish to embark on, first decide on the outcomes you want and as much as possible hire someone or a company that knows what needs to be done and can help you achieve these outcomes. The right person or company in view of your expected outcomes will create a strategy which should involve among other things:
1. Identifying your target market
2. Selecting the relevant media (dependent on the business type and target market) for your product or service.
3. Creating or identifying content (pictures, videos, doodles, memes, text, etc) that drive home the message of the campaigns
4. Deciding on the reasonable length of time needed to execute various campaigns within the strategy.
5. Pricing for the strategy and campaigns that do not sacrifice quality and necessarily gives you value for your money.
