ℹ 11 Facts about Lenovo
1⃣ Lenovo was founded in Beijing on November 1, 1984 as Legend by team of engineers led by Liu Chuanzhi and Danny Lui.
2⃣ The entire team and cofounders of Legend were the same, and there were only 11 engineers on board at the time. Each founder was a member of the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
3⃣ In May 1988, Legend placed its first recruitment advertisement in a newspaper. Such ads were rare in China at the time. Out of the 500 respondents, 280 were selected to take a written employment exam. 120 of these candidates were interviewed in person. 58 were offered. The newly hired staff included 18 people with graduate degrees, 37 with undergraduate degrees, and three students with no university-level education. Yang Yuanqing, the current chairman and CEO of Lenovo, was among the master's degree holders.
4⃣ By 1996, Legend was the market leader in China and began selling its own laptops. By 1998 it held 43 percent of the domestic computer market share in China, selling approximately one million computers.
5⃣ In the early days of 1997, Legend sold only computers to China. However, once Microsoft signed an agreement for HKD 93 million (the Hong Kong dollar), they became a world leader in computer manufacturing. In those days, the royalty in USD for each copy of Windows 95 installed on a computer was between 50$-$100.
6⃣ In 2004 for its expansion to the overseas market, the company was rebranded as Lenovo, combining the words "Le-" (from Legend) and "novo", a Latin abbreviation for “new”. Spent nearly $30 million to rebrand and advertise its rebranded name.
7⃣ In 2005 Lenovo acquired and paid US$1.25 billion for IBM's personal computer business including the ThinkPad laptop and ThinkCentre desktop lines. This acquisition made Lenovo the third-largest computer maker worldwide by volume.
8⃣ In 2014 Lenovo acquired Motorola’s mobile company from Google (which Google bought it in 2012 to gain Motorola's patent portfolio) for $2.91 Billion USD. The acquisition reason from Lenovo was about getting access to 2,000 of Motorola’s patents as well. Later Lenovo disclosed its intent to use Motorola Mobility as a way to expand into the United States smartphone market.
9⃣ In 2014 Lenovo acquired IBM's x86 server business for a purchase price of US$2.3 billion.
🔟 This year, Lenovo opened factories in China, Mexico and Hungary. Also pushed hard with a new sales team and marketing strategy called NextWave, focusing on the – the next wave of hyperscalers and cloud builders and reaping big rewards in terms of server – and storage – sales.
1⃣1⃣ According to Lenovo ISG Infrastructure Solutions Group’s report in Q2 FY22/23 ISG had Record revenue of US$2.6 billion, up 33% year-on-year, with operating profit rising to an all-time high of US$36 million. They are really focused on it. As their chairman pointed out, by 2025, the server market alone is expected to reach US$134 billion. In the same time frame, the edge infrastructure market will grow at over 21% CAGR to reach US$47 billion. In addition, the storage market will exceed US$36 billion.
