Could lupin become one of the next major sustainable protein sources for food and feed?

The Lupin Loop project set out to answer exactly that.

Bringing together expertise across agronomy, seed chemistry, ingredient processing, and food product development, this ambitious UK–Canada collaboration explored how lupin can move beyond promise and towards real commercial opportunity across the UK, Europe, and North America.

Led by Soya UK, and delivered with partners including the UK Agri-Tech Centre, Lupin Platform, Biopower Technologies, and the University of Leeds, the project built on earlier lupin research to generate new knowledge and innovation across the value chain.

Work also included activity at the UK Agri-Tech Centre’s Digital Phenotyping Lab, contributing to a deeper understanding of lupin seed characteristics relevant to future applications. Funded by Innovate UK and Protein Industries Canada, Lupin-Loop highlights the power of international collaboration in accelerating the future of sustainable protein.

Our colleague Grace O’Gorman was at the BISAS Conference yesterday for the UK Agri-Tech Centre-sponsored Hammond Lecture.

Congratulations to Professor Mike Coffey (SRUC) and Marco Winters (AHDB) – joint winners of the Sir John Hammond Award. Over two decades, their partnership has delivered practical tools now used on farms across the UK. A powerful reminder that the biggest advances in agriculture don’t happen in isolation. They’re built on long-term partnerships – combining research, industry insight and real-world application to deliver meaningful impact on farm.

As Marco put it, “collaboration is non-optional”. And, as Mike reflected, the only constant is change – driven by new data, technologies and global challenges.

That mindset sits at the heart of what we do at the UK Agri-Tech Centre: working with agri-tech businesses to move innovation from development and validation through to real-world adoption. Because impact only happens when we work together.

Join the Antler Bio and UK Agri-Tech Centre team to explore how the science of epigenetics can transform the performance of your dairy herd.

If genetics were the whole story, cows with similar genes would perform the same. But in reality, some cows thrive while others struggle despite having identical genetic potential on paper. What matters is how those genes respond to feed, housing and everyday management.

EpiHerd is the only tool of its kind – using the science of epigenetics to analyse gene expression across the herd and explain why cows aren’t meeting their potential.

This workshop will explore the real on-farm challenges affecting health, fertility, production, and cost control.

Daffodils are more than just a sign of spring...

As part of a four-year study, we are working with a group of 10 contributors on the ‘Dancing with Daffodils’ project. The project aims to:

👉Develop a new feed additive that will reduce the impact of livestock on the environment

👉Make milk and meat production more sustainable

👉Reduce the carbon footprint of livestock production

👉Improve ruminant dietary protein utilisation

The humble daffodil is the key to achieving this and the project is working on extracting an alkaloid found in daffodils that will produce a feed additive you will be able to use on farm.

Meet the Innovator: Downforce Technologies

Downforce Technologies is part of the FASTA innovator cohort, addressing one of agriculture’s biggest opportunities: accurately measuring soil organic carbon at scale.

By combining satellite data with ground measurements, they’re helping unlock the potential of soils as a major carbon sink - with benefits for climate action, farm productivity and farmer livelihoods.

They’ve joined FASTA because they see real value in collaboration. Through the programme delivered by the UK Agri-Tech Centre and The Carbon Trust, they’re excited to connect with finance, food businesses and the wider UK agri‑industry to build partnerships that can help scale impact.

“FASTA brings together finance, banks, food companies and the UK ag industry - it’s the collaboration and partnership we’re really looking forward to.” - Downforce Technologies

This is the power of FASTA in action: bringing innovators and industry together to turn breakthrough ideas into real‑world impact, faster.
