You might imagine you get a logo. And you do. But it’s the smallest part of the job.

Before we draw anything, we’re looking at your competitors, working out who your customers really are, and building a brand strategy that gives every design decision a direction. The logo (and all its variations, so it works on a pair of sunglasses and a social avatar alike) comes after that.

It’s the difference between a brand that looks nice and one that makes people trust you, remember you and choose you.

What should actually be on your website homepage? 👀

Most homepages are a bit of a patchwork: some bits that look pretty, some bits someone suggested, and nothing quite doing its job.

Here’s what a homepage needs, in order:

A clear navigation menu
A hero section that says what you do and who it’s for
Problems and benefits, so people feel understood
An about section, because people buy from people
How you help, so there are no surprises
Results
Social proof

Swipe through for what each one does and why it matters. Be honest, how many does yours tick? ✅

Your website is your hardest-working employee. If it’s not pulling its weight, we’re happy to take a look and tell you what’s working and what isn’t. No sales pitch, just an honest chat. Drop us a DM.

Save this one for when you next give your homepage a once-over 📌

Another look at one of our favourite projects: The Old Post House in Addingham

We gave this existing coffee shop a whole new identity, from the name and logo through to signage and menu design, so everything feels cohesive from the door to the cup.

We were driving past recently and had to pull over for a few photos. Yes, it was closed. No, that didn’t stop us.

Coffee shops and independent eateries are some of our favourite projects to work on. Purely coincidental that we spend so much of our spare time in them with a coffee and a pastry. 🥐

Things I believe as a business owner (after a few years of getting it wrong first):

🤍 In a world full of AI content, being authentically real is your edge
🤍 AI is brilliant for tech headaches and untangling your thinking. It’s not for your ideas or your design
🤍 You need to play around at the start to find your niche
🤍 Trends are fun, but timeless design is the skill worth building
🤍 Busy ≠ growing
🤍 Marketing your own business is hard. You’re not boring anyone. You’re just sick of hearing yourself say it

Which one are you nodding along to? Tell me in the comments 👇

We’ve been having some interesting conversations lately about AI and web design.

We spoke to someone recently who had a particularly interesting experience with it.

Their current website had originally been designed using AI.

But they didn’t really like the result.

The website was live, but visually it didn’t feel right for the business.

So they experimented.

They prompted AI again and created another version.

And this time?

They preferred it.

It felt much closer to how they wanted the business to come across.

There was just one fairly important problem...

They couldn’t actually turn that concept into the website they needed.

And I think that’s where the conversation around AI and web design gets interesting.

Because generating something that looks good on screen is becoming incredibly easy.

But a website isn’t just a collection of attractive sections.

In this case, there were several different audiences to consider, two parts of the business that needed to work together, existing Google rankings to protect and booking systems that needed to stay in place.

The existing website also contained plenty of information, but the client felt it didn’t really flow and visitors had to work too hard to find things.

And perhaps most importantly, it didn’t really feel like them. They wanted more of their own personality and energy to come through online.

AI had helped them visualise a better direction.

But somebody still needed to work out how to make that direction function as an actual website.

That means structure.

Messaging.

User journey.

Branding.

SEO.

Functionality.

And lots of decisions about what belongs where and why.

So I don’t think AI makes web design less valuable.

I think it changes where the value is.

The ability to put boxes, images and text on a screen isn’t the difficult bit anymore.

Knowing what those boxes should contain, why they’re there and what you want someone to do next is.

We’re not the same business we were 10 years ago.

And we’d be slightly concerned if we were.

Our clients have changed. Our services have evolved. Our experience has grown. We know what we’re good at, who we want to work with and what we want Mint Sauce Media to be known for.

We’re more confident in our opinions, more selective about the work we take on and much more comfortable being ourselves.

And if you’ve been running your business for 5, 10 or 15 years, we’d guess quite a lot has changed for you too.

Maybe you’re working with bigger clients now.

Maybe your £500 projects became £5,000 projects.

Maybe you’ve dropped half the things you used to offer and become really bloody good at the other half.

Maybe you’ve built a team.

Maybe you finally know exactly who you want to work with.

Maybe you’re simply far more confident in your business than you were when you started.

But did your branding and website evolve alongside all of that?

Because they don’t automatically keep up.

It’s surprisingly easy to build a brilliant, established business while still presenting a version of it from five or ten years ago.

And there doesn’t have to be anything *wrong* with your current branding for you to have outgrown it.

It might have been absolutely right for the business you were then.

The question is whether it’s still right for the business you are now.

If your business has grown up but your brand or website hasn’t quite caught up, send us a DM.

That’s exactly the sort of thing we love helping businesses figure out.

One of the biggest problems I see with websites isn’t a lack of content.

It’s too much content with no clear journey through it.

Businesses grow.

They add another service. Then another page. Then a new menu item. Then a dropdown. Then some FAQs. Then a new offer.

Before long, the website contains everything...

but visitors have to work far too hard to find the bit that matters to them.

A website shouldn’t simply be somewhere you store information about your business.

It should guide people.

When someone lands on it, they should quickly understand:

Can you help me?

Are you the right business for what I need?

And what should I do next?

That’s why structure and user journey matter just as much as how a website looks.

Sometimes improving a website isn’t about adding anything at all.

It’s about simplifying it.

Does your website guide people, or just give them lots of places to click?

“We don’t want to alienate our existing customers.”

We hear this a lot when we talk to established businesses about rebranding.

And we GET IT.

Those customers might have been with you for years. They know you, trust you and have played a big part in getting the business where it is today.

The last thing you want is to unveil a shiny new brand and have them wondering what on earth happened to you.

But there’s another side to it.

Your business probably isn’t the same business they first discovered either.

You’ve got more experience. Your offer has evolved. Your ambitions have changed. You might be charging more, doing better work and trying to attract a different level of client.

Yet visually, you’re still introducing the version of the business you were five or ten years ago.

That’s why a good rebrand shouldn’t be about throwing everything away and starting again.

It should understand what’s worth keeping, what people already recognise and trust, and what no longer represents you.

Then build from there.

Because you can respect the business that got you here without letting it dictate what the next ten years have to look like.

If your business has moved on but your branding hasn’t quite caught up, drop us a DM. We’d love to have a chat.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s networking walk in support of York Against Cancer 💙

It was lovely to bring people together, catch up with familiar faces and make new connections, all while supporting a charity that means a lot to us.

A particularly big shout-out to Bosuns and The Riverfront for hosting us for coffee and cake afterwards. Their generosity on the cost helped us raise funds for York Against Cancer, and we’re really grateful for their support. Thank you for looking after us so well!

And, of course, a big thank you to our co-host Chris Bayles from Mint Sauce Media. Always a pleasure to work together and get people out from behind their desks for a chat.
