Celebrating Six Years

Six years ago, I became a dad with a family to support BUT I decided to leave my stable job to head into self employment, crazy right.

I started my first week with:
⚡ No clients
⚡ No plan
⚡ No savings

What I did have, was a massive passion for building something for myself and my family. It's been quite a ride from starting day one in my spare bedroom - check out those awful photos from my first week. Having not started my business until I was 30, and realising how little I knew about business at the time and it's been quite a steep learning curve. You never stop learning.

As I celebrate 6 years of self employment, I look back on 6 things that have shaped my business and help me thrive :

⚡ Don't shy away from the difficult conversations. The sooner you tackle an issue, the easier it is to resolve.

⚡ Don’t take it too seriously, have fun. Enjoy your journey.

⚡ Continuous learning is essential. Nobody is going to do it for you - it’s your responsibility to make it happen.

⚡ Adaptability is key. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt to change is critical for success.

⚡ Believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid to dream big and aim high.

⚡ Surround yourself with positive influences and let that inspire you.

Let the adventures continue.

⭐️ Wombourne Allstars Social Veterans 💪

Wombourne Allstars Social Veterans FC started in January this year, with the simple idea that a group of men aged 35+ could regularly meet and play football (with an optional pint and chat after).

Since January it’s grown to almost 40 members and a team playing in the South Staffordshire Veterans League Division 4.

The emphasis of the team is on the social element. Not everyone has played in a team before and there’s a spread of ages. The common factor is that everyone enjoys a kick about, wants to get a bit fitter and increase their social circle. It’s a mixture of Allstars coaches and the local community.

Friday 24th saw us play our second fixture vs Shelfield. We drew the first and, being disappointed not to have won it, wanted to get a win under our belts.

The game started evenly, but we opened the scoring when Andy Arkless and Damien Bates combined with the latter squaring for Si Haddock to tap home.

It wasn’t long before Si added to his tally, volleying in from the edge of the box to put us 2-0 up. Martin Dawes outrageously scored direct from a corner to give us a 3-0 half time lead.

Second half Damien Bates went through one on one to put us 4-0 up before Si Haddock completed his hat-trick, tapping in after a smart save from the keeper making the final score a convincing 5-0 win.

Player of the match had to go to Simon Haddock for his hat-trick but it was a great team performance. Solid defence, hard working midfield and plenty of chances made in attack.

⭐️ We hope you’ll join us in congratulating our vets for their great performance 🙌

Looking back over the last couple months. - loving the variety of Logos I am lucky enough to be able to work on.

Always pushing myself forward to do even better work. Each project and logo has its own story to tell. Bold marks that will stand the test of time.

Creating our future

Earlier this year, I had an amazing opportunity to work with Marston's on their behaviour framework. A massive change within the business, how everyone behaves, defining how everyone shows up for work each day and how everyone works together to accomplish their mission of: Pubs to be proud of.

Working collaboratively with the wonderful team at Marston's, we created something that would define and play a crucial role in the success of the business in the years to come, both individually and collectively as one team.

This project brought together different services in 1 project:
⚡ Discovery workshops
⚡ Brochure design
⚡ Brand strategy
⚡ 5 Animations
⚡ Branding
⚡ Logo design
⚡ Storyboarding
⚡ Branding Workshops
⚡ Illustration

Matt approached Logo Paul, to design a logo and branding for his new outdoor adventure clothing business.

After our initial meeting it was clear they needed some Creative direction that was bold, adventurous and striking. North Peaks were keen to develop a brand that celebrated all things mountains and their love of adventures absolutely had to shine through in this brand.

🚀 Well it's official, we have launched a collaborative creative studio

📣 We are In the Middle - Branding, Digital, Multi Media and Brand strategy

😊 I am fortunate to team up and share a vision for our creative studio with someone who is not only outrageously talented but most importantly a very good friend Atish Chitrakar

🙌 I never thought we would be in this position and our vision would not be possible without some of our amazing clients we have both worked with over the last 12 months. It’s been an amazing journey to this point and we are really excited for the future

Your continued support is massive to us both. So any:

DO GOOD WORK FOR NICE PEOPLE

Well, it's been a flat out first 6 months of 2022 so I have just returned off a well earned 2 week break. I came back to an absolutely amazing gift from one of my clients that made me feel wonderfully appreciated. Running a business is hard but this was a reminder that I work with some incredible businesses / people who appreciate creativity and the value it brings to their business.

The reason I love doing what I do - working hard for INCREDIBLE people. Humungous thank you to Vicky Fletcher FIIC, Gemma Lynn and Liz Fenlon - you are all amazing who are not only brilliant at what you do but genuine people. We have worked hard on some amazing projects over the last 6 months but we have such a laugh at the same time.

On a side note you haven't tried you absolutely must!

Three cheers to change

Energy consumption is tricky to tackle across a 14 hectares brewery site. However, the senior team at Marston's knew their people could do more by taking responsibility and making some small changes to the way they work but they needed to get everyone on board.

Overall objectives for a campaign would help reduce energy consumption by 20% in 5 years (saving approximately £410,000).

You're the right tool for the job put ownership in our people’s hands and makes the most of the ‘people power’ at the brewery. It’s bold, grabs attention and spans across the entire site. The idea is that if everyone does their bit, it’ll make a big difference collectively to the environment and the amount of money Marston's spends on energy.

This project was a huge success internally and externally. The campaign won an Institute of Internal Communication Award for best change / transformation communication but more importantly staff engagement with the project was significant and it really started the ball rolling for change within the business.

No such thing as a bad idea - just ones that don't work for the client. Sometimes you have to explore different concepts to get to where you want to go. It's part of the process - without these marks I may not have reached that sweet spot where my client is proud and happy with their new brand mark.

Very often as designers we show off finished logos polished logos but a lot of work goes in behind the scenes and it doesn't always hit the mark at the first attempt. Nothing wrong with heading back to the drawing board with ideas - explore and experiment some more, it is the key to truly great concepts and getting the right mark for the client.

Despite working over 48 hours this week, my daughter asked me why "Mom is always at work but you don't work" am I winning that they believe I do not work?

One of the reason I went self employed was to be around for my daughter's while they grow up. The work / family life / life balance is hard - like proper hard. Yes, I work early mornings. Yes, I work late into the evening but I have the flexibility to schedule my workload and make it fit in with my life.

So this week despite "not working" I have completed some exciting projects:

⚡ Created some new logo concepts
⚡ Sent 6 brand items to print
⚡ Finish a brand strategy animation
⚡ Concepts for an internal brand strategy campaign
⚡ Designed some corporate brand materials
⚡ Designed some beer mats
⚡ Had 6 client meetings
⚡ Quoted up 5 new exciting projects

I will continue to "not work" next week so in the meantime here are some photos of me not working this week
