Veeam challenges the meaning of an “offsite backup”

An offsite backup is not automatically an attack-resistant backup.

In Veeam's latest article, our long-standing technology partner, highlights four properties that are frequently treated as interchangeable:

1️⃣ Offsite provides geographical separation
2️⃣ Air-gapped limits reachability
3️⃣ Immutable prevents alteration or deletion
4️⃣ Recoverable means restoration has been tested and proven

A backup can be hundreds of miles away and still remain exposed if it sits within the same administrative boundary, uses the same identity provider or can be deleted through the same privileged accounts as production.

A useful resilience test is therefore simple - identify every account capable of deleting both production data and its backup. If that list is not empty, further separation may be required.

Why do we use liquid immersion-cooled hard drives for our Cloud Storage???

When people think about cloud storage, they think about disk capacity, and maybe security.

Definitely, just a handful of them will think about resilience.

Fact -> cloud storage (hard drives) generates heat! Both HDDs (including mechanical heat) and solid-state drives (SSDs) rely on electrical circuits and controllers that naturally resist electrical flow and dissipate energy as heat when reading or writing data.

A healthy temperature for the hard drive is between 30°C and 50°C (86°F to 122°F).

Temperatures in data centres (servers) exceed 50°C, which can shorten their lifespan and often cause slow performance.

Traditional air-cooled data centres operate in hot and cool cycles. Therefore, thermal expansion and contraction are bad for hard drives. Hard drives are built with microscopic tolerances. Components like the aluminium or glass platters and the steel chassis expand when hot and contract when cool. Frequent fluctuations cause these materials to repeatedly warp and shift, throwing off the precise alignment of the read/write heads. Also, the drive’s PCB expands at a different rate than the electronic components soldered onto it. Constant cycling creates mechanical stress on these solder joints, eventually causing them to crack and break.

To elevate performance and resilience, we opted to employ liquid immersion cooling for our cloud storage. This technology directly transfers heat away from IT equipment through a dielectric fluid.

It’s a slightly over-engineered experiment, and a reminder that you need liquid circulation and heat exchange manifolds to cool it properly.

Resilience always appears expensive - until a major system fails.

The recent UK air-traffic-control outage reportedly caused the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights and affected more than 300k people, after a critical system shut down for four hours.

Reports have also raised questions about the availability of a dedicated backup system, although an independent review is still under way and it would be wrong to draw firm conclusions before it is completed.

Nevertheless, the incident raises a familiar question for every organisation:

"How much does redundancy cost - and how does that compare with the cost of being unable to operate?"

Backup and disaster recovery systems are not maintained because failure is expected every day.

They exist because the consequences of one serious failure may be unacceptable.
