Around 70% of the ELN market has already moved to the cloud. So why are some of the most innovative biopharma organizations still hesitating, just as AI is rewriting what's possible?

There's a quiet tension in modern biopharma R&D.

Data is the most valuable asset an organization holds, yet many teams still protect it using the very systems that put it at risk. Many researchers still depend on disparate systems and manual data input which introduces opportunities for errors and can result in Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warning letters, fines or recalls.

The market has largely decided. Although the trend towards cloud-based ELN deployments is becoming stronger, with cloud representing about 70% of the market, there are still some organizations that are hesitant to implement and adopt cloud-based laboratory data management systems. The real question isn't whether the cloud is coming. It's what the holdouts trade away by waiting.

And the stakes just got higher. AI is only as good as the data behind it; accurate, complete, reusable and accessible. Cloud-based deployments can unlock the potential of AI and ML, which is dependent on having "good" data, and only with "good" data will these tools be able to power drug discovery, streamline processes, reduce costs and accelerate time to market. Teams still tied to on-premise silos aren't just slowing down today, they're building on a foundation that can't support tomorrow's AI.

This is the kind of complex, high-stakes challenge best solved together. At IDBS, part of Danaher, we partner closely with the world's leading biopharma organizations to connect data, workflows and teams across the scientific lifecycle, helping them move from idea to impact faster, and with greater confidence.

The cloud isn't just a safer place for your data. It's the foundation for AI-ready, connected science at global scale.

So, is your data ready to power your AI? 👇

Sustainability in bioprocessing isn't simply a question of fed-batch versus continuous. It is a question of how the process, facility and the data behind them work together.

A newly published paper, Assessing the Sustainability of Fed-Batch and Continuous Process Formats for Monoclonal Antibody Manufacturing via Bioprocess Modeling, offers an interesting perspective on that challenge.

One of its central conclusions is that the results “underscore the critical role of integrated process and facility design” in more carbon-efficient, sustainable biomanufacturing. The researchers modeled single-use fed-batch, stainless-steel fed-batch and single-use continuous mAb manufacturing at equivalent annual output. The analysis found differences in water and material intensity between the scenarios, but also highlighted just how significant the facility itself can be. At the scale evaluated, facility operations including HVAC and lighting accounted for roughly 85% of total modeled energy consumption, while process technology also influenced energy and material use. Process improvements in the single-use continuous scenario cut water consumption by 26% and consumable intensity by 58%,

There is an important data question behind this too.

As bioprocess studies extend over longer periods, particularly when evaluating continuous approaches, teams need to understand what is happening across the duration of the study, not simply at individual experimental endpoints. Longer studies can create a greater practical need to keep experimental, process and analytical information connected and accessible so that scientists can examine performance in context.

That is where digital bioprocess infrastructure becomes increasingly important.

IDBS Polar for Bioprocessing is designed to integrate experiment, process and analytical data and turn it into actionable insights. IDBS Polar helps bioprocess teams gain continuous process knowledge, reduce operational risk and connect data, people and processes across development and manufacturing.

As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in process development, the ability to understand process performance across time, experiments and scales can help create the knowledge foundation scientists need when evaluating and optimizing different development strategies.

The science in this new paper is a useful reminder: sustainability decisions are interconnected.

And the data needed to understand those connections should be too.

What happens when CMC knowledge doesn't travel with the process?

Every handoff across the CMC lifecycle is a chance to lose critical context. That's why CMC continuity matters.

As product and process knowledge moves from development to tech transfer to manufacturing, insights, decisions and rationale become fragmented across systems, documents and teams. The result? Delays, inefficiencies and added risk, exactly when confidence matters most.

CMC continuity preserves and connects that knowledge from bench to batch, so teams can reduce handoff risk, accelerate technology transfer, improve manufacturing readiness and make better-informed decisions.

What it looks like in practice:
✅ Development teams capture knowledge in context, as work happens
✅ Analytical and process teams see not just what happened, but why
✅ Tech transfer teams inherit a connected view of process, product and decisions
✅ Manufacturing teams receive data with the context needed to act on it

Our latest blog explores why CMC continuity is now a strategic priority for modern biopharma organizations: https://ow.ly/RzBq50ZV28N

"Science time is very expensive. They should not be spending time copying and pasting." — Brad Feilmeier, Sr. Principal Business Analyst, Boehringer Ingelheim

He's right. And his team did something about it: four disconnected systems consolidated into one validated workflow, ~3 hours per experiment handed back to scientists, and 118+ experiments now processed every month.

The unlock wasn't new software. It was using what they already had, differently.

Your lab may be digital. But is it actually connected?

That's the question Zach Martin from Bend Bioscience explored in last week's webinar on connected lab operations.

Many organizations have digital records, electronic systems, and automated processes. Yet scientists still spend valuable time searching for information, reconciling data across systems, checking equipment status, locating materials, and navigating disconnected workflows.

In this practical customer session, Zach shares how Bend Bioscience built a connected operational foundation spanning inventory, equipment, samples, workflows, review processes, and traceability across development and GMP. He also demonstrates how the team uses IDBS Polar to capture information at the point of ex*****on, improving visibility, reducing manual effort, and creating a stronger foundation for analytics and AI.

Zach also shared an example of a customer requesting all records associated with a method validation study within IDBS Polar. According to Bend's QA team, the complete record set was retrieved in around 20 minutes. Zach noted that in previous environments this could have taken days.

If you're responsible for laboratory operations, quality, development, or digital transformation, you'll find plenty of real-world lessons in this recording.

Submission readiness should not begin when submission preparation starts.

It begins much earlier, with every experiment, risk assessment and scientific decision made during development.

Yet critical CMC knowledge is often distributed across systems, spreadsheets, reports and individual teams. By the time it is needed for a regulatory filing, organisations may be working backwards to connect a reported value to its original evidence and explain the reasoning behind it.

That is not simply a document-management problem. It is a break in knowledge continuity. When product requirements, experimental evidence, CQAs, CPPs, risk assessments and development decisions remain connected, submission readiness becomes an outcome of the development process rather than a retrospective exercise in investigation and reconstruction.

In this new SelectScience article, Mark Buswell and Ken Forman discuss how preserving decision lineage can strengthen the path from process development to technology transfer, manufacturing and regulatory submission.

How much of your submission is being built during development, and how much will need to be reconstructed later?

We're heading to Discovery & Development US 2026 in San Diego, October 12-13.

Drug discovery generates vast amounts of data, but the reasoning behind key decisions is often lost.

As organizations look to accelerate discovery and build stronger foundations for AI, connecting scientific data, workflows and knowledge across the R&D lifecycle is becoming increasingly important. The challenge isn't simply generating more data: it's ensuring the evidence, rationale and scientific context behind key decisions remain accessible when they're needed most.

That's the work we do at IDBS. As part of Danaher, we help biopharma teams turn scientific data into an AI-ready data foundation, so knowledge continuity and scientific data management support faster, more confident decisions from discovery through development.

We're looking forward to discussing how the industry is approaching these challenges, from scientific data management and knowledge continuity to AI readiness.
