There's nothing quite like the moment a new build powers up for the first time on our Wickford bench 💜

Here's a quick tip if you're thinking about a new PC: balance matters more than one big-name part. A top-end graphics card paired with a budget processor wastes money, because one ends up holding the other back. A well-matched mid-range pair often feels better in real use than a lopsided "flagship" build.

That balance is exactly what we plan with you. We hand-build gaming PCs, creator workstations and quiet family machines around what you actually use, with parts at cost plus £149 build labour. Every build is stress-tested for 24 hours before it comes home with you, with no trial software slowing it down.

Laptop says plugged in… but not charging?

Before you order a new battery, try these:

Reseat the lead at both ends and try a different wall socket. USB-C needs enough wattage, and a phone charger often won't fill a laptop.

If the charge icon only appears when you hold the plug at a funny angle, stop. That's often the port, not the battery.

Check for a battery-health or conservation mode on Dell, Lenovo and HP. Many stop around 80% on purpose, so the icon looks "stuck".

But if the case is bulging, the trackpad is lifting, or the palm rest is hot or tight, stop. Unplug it, don't keep charging it, and don't press on or puncture the battery. That's a swollen battery, and it's a safety job.

Still stuck? Book a free diagnostic in Wickford, with free SS11/SS12 collection. Battery labour is from £55 plus the part, and only if the battery turns out to be the fault.

That “why is my laptop so loud?” moment usually means dust, heat, and a pile of startup junk — not that it’s finished.

Quick tip you can do safely at home: shut down, unplug, and use a soft brush (not a vacuum) around the vents to clear loose fluff. Don’t open the case or blast canned air deep inside unless you know the machine — that can push dust further in.

If it’s still slow, hot, or unreliable after that, our Wickford Laptop MOT is a fixed £75 50-point service: proper internal clean, thermal check, speed tune-up, and malware sweep, with free collection in SS11/SS12. No-Fix-No-Fee.

Diagnostics in the tech industry mean looking past what software logs are telling you! 🖥️🔍

We had an ASUS TUF Gaming laptop on the bench this week experiencing random boot failures straight into the setup screen. While diagnostic software returned a fake "100% Healthy" status for the storage drive, opening up the chassis revealed a classic design flaw: the manufacturer layered the ultra-fast storage drive directly over the internal wireless card. Under heavy working loads, the intense trapped heat was causing the drive to temporarily cut out.

Instead of recommending a costly and completely unnecessary drive replacement based on surface symptoms, we took a repair-first approach. We installed high-grade thermal interface pads to safely dissipate the heat pocket permanently. 🔧

Engineering flaws require real, physical solutions—not just software patches. If your gaming rig, laptop, or home office setup is acting up or crashing randomly, let's get it sorted.

As always, our initial workshop diagnostic checks are 100% free with absolutely zero obligation, and we manage all the doorstep transit variables for you.
